Hindu cow row

Not since Salmon Rushdie's book `Satanic Verses' provoked Islamic

fundamentalist leaders to issue a fatwa has one book caused such a

violent reaction. The Myth of the Holy Cow (to be published in

Britain in the spring) has already inflamed political and religious

feeling in India with the claim that beef, which is taboo for Hindus,

was once part of the ancient Indian diet. The work, by the Professor

of History at Delhi University, Dwee Jendra Narrayan Jaha, has been

burnt outside his house, been banned in the city of Hyderabad and has

even prompted the Hindu government's cow protection wing to demand

his arrest.
