Here are some planetary descriptions from Brihat Jataka, chapter two:

 

" The Sun represents the atma, the Moon the mind, Mars strength,

Mercury speech, Jupiter wisdom and happiness, Venus passions, and

Saturn the sorrows, of the Kalapurusha repectively. The Sun and Moon

are rajas, Mars is commander-in-chief, Mercury is yuva raj, Jupiter

and Venus are ministers, and Saturn is the servant."

 

[ The Kalapurusha is the form of time, the zodiac.]

 

" Heli and Surya are names forthe Sun. Chandrama and Sitarasmi are

names for the Moon. Hemno, Vit, Gno, Bodhana and Induputra are names

for Mercury. Ara, Vakra, Kruradrik, and Avanaya denote Mars; Kona,

Manda, Suryaputra and Asita are names for Saturn."

 

" Jiva, Angira, Suruguru, Vachasampathi and Ijya are terms for

Jupiter. Suta, Bhrigu, Brigusuta, Sita and Aspujit are names for

Venus. Tamas, Agu and Asura are names for Rahu, Sikhi stands for

Kethu. Their other names must be learnt from well-known names in the

world."

 

[ Note: B Suryanarayan Rao, B. V. Raman's grandfather, says that

Rahu's name " Agu " refers to one who has no bright rays, " gu." The

prefix " a " is negative, just as it is in the English word "

atypical." Rahu and Ketu are shadowy planets, Chaya Grahas.]

 

" The Sun is dark red, the Moon white, Mars blood red, Mercury green,

Jupiter yellow or golden, Venus neither white nor black, Saturn is

black."

 

" Copper color is governed by the Sun, while white by the Moon, blood

red by mars, Green by Mercury, yellow by Jupiter, variegated colors

by Venus [ If Venus stands for white, then it must reflect all

colors, because white is all colors combined. The ancient Hindus must

have known this to make such a statement.] and black by Saturn. The

Sun has Agni as adidevata, The Moon Ambu, Mars has Kumara, Mercury

has Keshava, Jupiter has Indra, Venus has Indrani, and Saturn has

Kaha. The East is governed by the Sun, Venus Southeast, Mars the

South, Rahu Southwest, Saturn the West, The Moon the Northwest,

Mercury the North and Jupiter the Northeast. the waning Moon, the

Sun, Mars, Saturn and Mercury in conjunction with them are all

malefics."

 

" Saturn and Mercury are impotent, Venus and the Moon are females,

and the rest are masculine."

 

" Sukra and Guru represent brahmins [ priests ], Kuja and Ravi

warriors, Chandra merchants, Mercury servants, Saturn represents

outcastes. Chandra, Ravi and Jupiter represent satva 9 goodness ),

Mars and Saturn ignorance, and Mercury and Venus represent passion."
