Guest guest
Advani convenes high level meet on Jammu attack NDTV Correspondent Thursday, May 16, 2002 (New Delhi): We in India are not just unhappy with Pakistan, but with the Western world as well. - L K Advani Home Minister L K Advani has convened a high-level meeting today to begin formulating a suitable response to the Jammu attack. The meeting will be attended by Defence Minister George Fernandes, Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir Farooq Abdullah and top army commanders. And on his way back from Goa, Home Minister L K Advani said, "It was said that all those countries that support terrorism will not get any support from others. It is unfortunate that despite the fact that Pakistan has not stopped its activities in India it continues to get support from other countries. We in India are not just unhappy with Pakistan, but with the Western World as well." It was said that all those countries that support terrorism will not get any support from others. It is unfortunate that despite the fact that Pakistan has not stopped its activities in India it continues to get support from other countries. We in India are not just unhappy with Pakistan, but with the Western world as well. - L K Advani Advani campaigned in Goa yesterday, but his focus was on the Jammu attack. With all political parties closing ranks over the attack, Advani's underlining message to Pakistan was that patience is running thin. Advani said the attack near Jammu constituted a challenge not only to India but also to the international coalition against terrorism. The message the terrorists gave through the latest strike was "we who are on the path of terrorism have launched a jihad and care two hoots for your coalition against international terrorism," the Home Minister said. He ruled out dialogue with Pakistan unless that country stopped cross-border terrorism and handed over the 20 terrorists wanted by India. Pervez Musharraf calls this a freedom struggle. But what sort of freedom struggle kills innocent men, women and children? India has been patient for long enough but now our patience is running out. - L K Advani "We have made it amply clear that there can be no talks with Pakistan as long as cross-border terrorism continues. Pakistan is doggedly pursuing the path of terrorism," Advani said. In Kathmandu, the visiting Indian army chief indicated that this was a time to keep up the pressure at the border with Pakistan and there was no question of pulling back troops after the attack on the cantonment in Jammu. "I don't answer to speculation. But I don't think the time has come to withdraw the troops from the border," observed General S Padmanabhan, Chief of Army Staff. The Home Ministry meeting is likely to be the start of a series over the next few days, not just within the government, but also with the Opposition.
