Guest guest
"At NASA, Dr Kalam reportedly was struck by a painting which showed a battle between English soldiers and Tipu Sultan of Mysore in which rockets were shown flying in the sky. THE ENGLISH TOOK THESE ROCKETS HOME AND BASED ON A STUDY OF TIPU'S ROCKETS THEY DEVELOPED MODERN ROCKETS. This fired Dr Kalam's imagination and energised him to develop India's own satellite launch vehicles." A scientist who plays the veena and is well versed in the Quran and Bhagvad Gita, Dr Kalam does not conform to anyone's stereotype. When he first called on (then) defence minister Mulayam Singh Yadav, Mr Yadav wanted to impress Dr Kalam with his knowledge of Urdu and spoke for a few minutes before Dr Kalam interjected to say that he had not understood anything the minister had said. "I know only Tamil and English," he confessed to a sheepish Mr Yadav. Baffled by the earthy homespun talent of Dr Kalam and the success and the secretiveness of the 1998 nuclear tests, a distinguished US strategic policy analyst once said at an India-US dialogue that followed the 1998 tests, "How come Dr Kalam never went to the United States? He never studied abroad, he never worked at any of our universities. How come?!" That is the cornerstone of the pride of Dr Kalam's disciples, that he is so self-made and home-made. Dr Kalam did visit the US briefly, spending three months at the National Aeronautical and Space Administration (NASA).
