The sanitation barometer:One of the depressing aspects of life in India is the

state of its toilets. Local governments have been building toilet blocks and

go through the charade of maintaining them. The reality is that almost none of

their toilets are usable. Things are however beginning to change gradually.

Here is a story from Pune where the urban poor are playing a part in the design

and construction of their community toilets. Being proud of what they have

created, they go on to pay for their use and maintain them with devotion. Read
