Friend Dilip has raised some very interesting points, let me respond.

One the real name of the Golden Temple is Hari Mandir because to quote Sardar

Khushwant Singh the name of Hari appears over 8000 times out of the 15000 odd

names that the name of God is taken in the Guru Granth Sahib. Hari as we all

know is a name of Lord Vishnu. So much for the holiest place of the Sikhs. It

got the name Golden Temple because of the gold plating done by Maharaja Ranjit

Singh sometime between 1830-1845.

Two when we talk of Sikhism we must talk of Guru Nanak's teachings and Khalsa

founded by Guru Gobind Singh. The former was a result of the Bhakti movement

and Vedanta as has been rightly pointed out by Dilip Singh. However subsequent

Gurus esp Guru Gobind Singh founded Khalsa on 31/3/1699 to raise a battalion of

people to fight the muslims. If there was no Islam to fight there would have

been no Turban, Kripan, Long hair and the other five K's.

Three who ever said that the caste system is not prevalent in the Sikhs, read

the Times of India matrimonial column every Sunday on the net and see, in fact

yu will find similiar castes between punjabi hindus and punjabi sikhs.

Four on idol worship, it was introduced in India by the Buddhists and Jains said

Swami Vivekananda, read my article who is a hindu on the site, two as vedanta

says idols are not an end to themselves but only a means to reach there. The

Arya Samajis a Punjabi sect does not believe in idol worship does that make

them sikh.

Five if yu like to know about the origin of Punjabi language, the language in

which the guru granth sahib

.. Punjabi - The article tells you its origin and growth and its

development from 1300 to 1947 a.d. It covers the Pre-Nanak period, compilation

of Adi-Granth Sahib, how sayings of certain Sufi saints got into the Holy Book

and writings of my hero Guru Govind Singhji.

Six I am a descendent of the third Sikh Guru, my father was 50 % sikhs, and my

mother 25%, yet I am Hindu today.

Cheers and om

Dear friends,Though I am not a Sikh, I know a lot about thereligion as I have a

lot of Sikh friends. I havestudied the religion and have even visited several

ofthe most holiest sikh shrines in India including theGolden Temple in

Amritsar.Though it is true that Sikhism became a millitantreligion and

anti-muslim in the end, not surprising asthe 9th Guru and father of the last

Guru - Guru GobindSingh was killed on the orders of the Mugal

EmperorAurangajeb. However, the origins of Sikhism was not as portrayedby the

article - it did not originate out of hate ofIslam or muslims. It arose as part

of the Bhaktimovement when people started rebelling against theopressive

practices of the ruling classes - againstcastism and ritualistic practices of

Hinduism.Actually it was part of the Hindu reformationmovement. There are

several facts which the article did notpoint out:- Guru Nanak the founder of

Sikhism had several Muslimfollowers. In fact one of his first statement

afterbecoming a Guru was "There is no Hindu, nor anyMussalman." It is also a

matter of great significancethat at the very beginning of his mission, the

Guru'sfirst companion was Mardana, a low caste Muslim.- Guru Nanak went on Haj

to Mecca in Arabia. Of coursethe story of what he did there may anger some

muslims.Guru Nanak Dev slept with this feet towards the Kaabaat Mecca. When the

angry Mulla remonstrated hisimpertinence Guru Nanak Dev's humble reply

was,"Please turn my feet in the direction where there isno God."- Inspite of

what the Author keeps trying to portraysaying that the several gurus were in

fact Khatris(the warrior caste), Sikhism does not believe inCastism.- Unlike

Hindus, Sikhism does not believe in Idolworship. Sikhism preaches that there is

one God butthat he is formless.- Besides verses from several Hindu Holy books,

theGuru Granth Sahib, the holy book of the Sikhs alsocontain verses from the

Quran.-The Practice of the five K's: Kesh -unshorn hair andbeard, Kangh - comb,

Kara - steel bangle on the rightwrist, Kachcha - short drawers and Kirpan - a

steeldagger, started during the time of the last Guru- GuruGovind Singh. The

use of the surname Singh (lion) wasalso adopted at that time. You can read more

about him at:http://www.sikh.net/sikhism/gurus/GuruNanak.htmCheers,Dilip Singh
