Guest guest
Author: Arun Nehru Publication: Pioneer .....millions of Indians struggled against colonial rule. We fought war after war to maintain our sovereignty. Indians-a very historically and politically conscious people-still throng the movie halls to see stirring films on the heroic deeds of Shaheed Bhagat Singh. Our freedom fighters live on in memory, as real and palpable entities, as inspiring role models. What was it all for? Was our freedom struggle fought so that, 55 years after Independence, we should hand over power to a foreigner who adopted Indian citizenship not of her own will but because she was forced to? Did those stalwarts from whose labours this nation was born-including Panditji- ever dream when they drafted the Constitution that such a day would come? And can we assume that they would have approved of foreign-born leadership just because Sonia Maino Gandhi married Rajiv and became an Indian citizen only when he joined politics and assumed the post of Congress General Secretary?
