Guest guest
Wed, 25 Sep 2002 18:58:33 -0000 "S.Kalyanaraman" <kalyan97 Akshardham The term, 'Akshardham' includes two fundamental tenets of sana_tana dharma: aks.ara, 'non-decaying or eternal' and dham, 'dharma'. In this context, it is disturbing indeed to see commentators use the term, 'dharma' as a synonym for 'religion'. Even the President of Bharat in his message referred to 'dharma nirapeks.ata_' as a synonym for 'secularism'. 'Dharma' does NOT mean 'religion'. The word for 'religion' in almost all languages of Bharat is: 'matam', meaning 'opinion'. Dharma has no synonym in English and should be used as such; Dharma is a cosmic and consciousness order and spiritual quest is but one segment of this order. PM Vajpayee stated that the two terrorists who bloodied Akshardham had no religion. I submit that the PM is wrong. They had a religion; it is called Islamism. Anyway, here is a press report about the call by some muslims in Bharat to participate in the bandh called by Vishwa Hindu Parishad. This is a good development and should be a turning point in forcing the muslims of Bharat to deny islamism and embrace dharma. Afterall, their forefathers of the periods earlier to the 12th century were all adherants of dharma. So it will be homecoming for them to participate in para_vartan and return home to dharma. Aurobindo was not so confident about the muslims returning. But then, whoever thought that the two germanies would unite and that the Berlin wall would come down? Kalyan Muslim bodies call for bandh New Delhi, Sept 25. (UNI, PTI): Prominent Muslim intellectuals and organisations today expressed their revulsion against the dastardly killing of innocent people in yesterday's dastardly strike on the Swaminarain temple in Gandhinagar, saying the "pre- planned attack" was calculated to disgrace Islam and appealed to the people not to succumb to communal passions. All India Organisation of Imams of Mosques President Moulana Jamel Ahmed Ilyasi said such a heinous act was not sanctioned by any religion and the Holy Koran had clearly ordained the followers of Islam not to kill an innocent person. Indian Muslims would never support the "acts of crime in their beloved country", he added. Jamiat-Ulama-i-Hind President Maulana As'ad Madani said the strike was a terrorist act against the whole country and urged the government to initiate strong steps for maintenance of law and order and strengthening national solidarity. Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) Vice-Chancellor Nassem Ahmed said it was "an unfortunate and cowardly act intended to destroy the secular fabric of the country." The Movement for Empowerment of Muslim Indians, in a statement, said the attack was "highly deplorable and unjustified" and its perpetrators had no relationship whatsoever with any religion or civilised society. Signatories to the statement included Jamia Hamdard Chancellor Saiyid Hamid, Jamia Millia Islamia Chancellor Fakhruddin Khorakiwala, Jama'at-e-Islami Vice-President Maulana Shafi Moonis, India Islamic Cultural Centre Director General Moosa Raza, MOEMIN Secretary Navaid Hamid, Al Muslim Majlis-e- Mushawarat President Syed Shahabuddin and Minorities Council General Secretary Prof. Iqbal Ansari. Speaking in Mumbai, Maulana Sayyed Akhtar Ali, general secretary of the Qaumi Majlis-e-Shoora said: "We have urged people to close down their establishments to express solidarity with the kin of the victims of yesterday's attack." The All India Ulema Council has also supported the bandh. Meanwhile, Muslim leaders urged the community to maintain peace and calmness and not to succumb to provocation. "Such messages were being aired through madarassas throughout the country," he added. http://www.hinduonnet.com/thehindu/holnus/01252212.htm
