firing, while several others were injured as members of one community indulged

in rioting and arson at Vijapur locality of central Solapur district

yesterday.Curfew has been clamped for the entire day as Solapur continued to be

tense this morning. Top police officers and a large posse of policemen from the

state are camping in the district to ensure that no communal flare-up erupts

today. The violence broke out when members of the Muslim community were

demonstrating against the recent derogatory remarks made by an American Baptist

priest against the Prophet Mohammed in an interview telecast by CNBC on

Sunday.According to state police control, five people were killed in the

clashes. Two were killed in sporadic incidents of stabbing while three others

died when police resorted to firing to quell the rioters who had gone on a

violent spree damaging public property and indulging in arson. The situation in

the district was said to be tense but under control as the police have been

instructed to deal severely with miscreants.Shops and establishments as well as

schools, colleges and religious institutions remained closed this morning as

people were scared to venture out. Heavy patrolling of the sensitive areas is

in force while deputy chief minister, Mr. Chhagan Bhujbal, has reportedly

dashed to Solapur to take stock of the situation.Meanwhile, Muslim localities

in other cities of the state maintained a peaceful bandh yesterday

was a kind of muslim storm more than a riot. Interestingly, a Shiv Sena leader

was killed by the rioters when he went to see a vandalised idol. After this the

advise of other Shiv Sena leaders was to maintain calm and peace and brotherhood
