Several houses and vehicles were burned and mobs threw stones at each other and at the police, who used tear gas and fired rubber bullets.Police arrested 55 people and imposed a daylong curfew in the Maligawatte neighbourhood in Colombo, where the violence started with a dispute over construction of a mosque adjoining a Buddhist temple, the official said on condition of anonymity.Sinhalese, who comprise the majority of the island nation's 18.6 million people, are mostly Buddhists. Muslims number about 1.3 million.The dead man was a Muslim and the injured included 15 Muslims and six Sinhalese, said Pushpa Soysa, a spokeswoman of the hospital where the injured were being treated. Four of the injured were hit by rubber bullets.Clashes between Muslims and the mostly Buddhist Sinhalese are rare in Sri Lanka.Most violence occurs between the Sinhalese majority and the Tamil minority.
