Guest guest
Organic only: Vedic City suggests ban ************************ from FAIRFIELD LEDGER - Top Stories By Matt Mullenneaux, Ledger staff writer December 02, 2002 Town would likely be the first to enact such a restriction. VEDIC CITY -- Officials in Iowas newest city want to outlaw the sale of non-organic food inside the towns borders. The city council unanimously passed a resolution requiring all food items sold in the city to be organic through its first reading at Wednesdays meeting. "Vedic City doesn’t endorse poisoning its citizens," Vedic City Mayor Bob Wynne said. Wynne stated the resolution was prompted by an outbreak of allergic reactions in city residents. He believes the allergic reactions were related to recent crop dusting on nearby farms. If passed, the resolution make the sale of any food that is genetically modified or not grown organically illegal inside Vedic City. It would still be legal for someone to purchase non-organic food from outside the city limits and consume it within the city, Wynne said. The resolution would apply to restaurants and grocery stores in the city. Vedic City currently has one restaurant, located at the Raj resort, and no grocery stores. ©Fairfield Daily Ledger Inc. 2002 visit the website version to express your opinion of this story http://www.zwire.com/site/news.cfm?newsid=6252751&brd=1139&PAG=699&dept_id=1 42642&startrow=1&MaxRows=10 --------- Vedic City Leaders Reviewing Non-Organic Food Ban ************************************ http://RadioVillage.com (radio fairfield) E-News 12/4/02 Vedic City’s leaders want to ban all non-organic food from being sold within the city limits. Last week, the City Council passed the first reading of an ordinance that outlaws non-organic food in grocery stores or restaurants that are expected to be built in the town. There are no grocery stores in the town yet, and one restaurant there is at the Raj hotel and health spa. The food served at the Raj already complies with the new ordinance, but any new grocery stores or restaurants that set up shop in Vedic City would have to bear the stamp of organic foods. Most Vedic City residents commute into Fairfield to buy organic groceries that are not grown or made in the town already. Even though it may be illegal soon to buy genetically modified food in Vedic City, the law is not as strict as it seems. The ordinance will allow residents to eat non-organic food in the town brought-in from somewhere else. Since being incorporated in July of 2001, the government of Vedic City has passed a few unconventional laws. The official language of the town is ancient Sanskrit, and all buildings must face east to follow Vedic architecture rules. There will be two more readings of the ordinance before it officially hits the books. _____________ Join Excite! - http://www.excite.com The most personalized portal on the Web!
