Guest guest
Namaste People, I posted this to a non-Vedic site a week or so ago, but you'll see thatitis very interesting for us. I ran across this text the other day from the Chaitanya Charitamrita, a mideval, Bengali work. The book describes the birth and life of Krishna Chaitanya, considered to be an avatar. It would be good to have some background before you look at the text. Shree Chaitanya was active around the end of the 1400s, beginning of the 1500s. He had a huge impact. He took the attention of the masses away from the brahmin community, which had become phoney-ritualistic and abusive, and allowed them to directly participate in religion by chanting the names of God without and type of condition or restriction in terms of caste elegibility. He organized civil disobedience in this regard on a massive scale, and his impact was felt all over Bengal, across to Gujarat, across Northern India, and down as far as Puri. The text below refers to the latter part of his life when he was rather stationary at Puri, already directing a chanting movement all across India: CC Antya 9:8 " The inhabitants of the seven higher planetary systems-including the Demigods, the Gandharvas and the Kinnaras-and the inhabitants of the seven lower planetary systems (patalaloka), including the demons and Serpentine living entities, all visited Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu in the dress of human beings ." The Bengali word translated as serpentine living entities is visa- dhara . Reptiles in theform of human beings. Incredible! In the Puranas which describe the birth of Shree Krishna, it is openly explained that demigods took birth in human bodies in order to assist the Krishna incarnation inb his activities, and it is mentioned that King Kamsa was a demon in previous lives who took birth in human form to carry out his agendas. After all, Kamsa wasn't born as a beggar in the street, he was born in the position of a king from which he could and did create mischief. Bhaktivinode Thakur mentions a text from the Varaha Purana which states: Raksasah kalim ashritya Jayante brahma-yonishu " In the Kali-yuga demons take birth in the families of brahmins." When I look at the behavior and activities of the brahmin community over the last thousand years or so, this doesn't surprise me. But I digress. What surprises me is not that the author of the Puranas from before the advent of the Kali Yuga knew that demons appear in human form, but that even in mideval times there were pious people operating in Bengal who knew these things and who were able to recognize certain instances, certain visits. The merciful and pious activities of Chaitanya were certainly interesting enough for the pious, celestial beings to come and observe, and for the demoniac, reptile forms, too, each for different motives. This means that we are not entirely alone. Well-meaning humans with good intentions visit us and bring about social movements and such to help better the spiritual condition of the population, even though these are basically bad times- Kali Yuga.
