Hindu, Chinese devotees had inter-religious welcome for New Year

Devotees from Hock Huat Keng Temple and Sri Veeramuthu Muneeswarar

Temple came together on Wednesday to welcome the New Year.

While others partied to welcome 2003, they took part in a different

kind of celebration in Yishun to pray and for thanksgiving.

Accompanied by rousing music, more than a hundred Hindu devotees and

fellow Chinese from the Hock Huat Keng temple next door carried

milkpots in a procession around both temples.

In a show of piety, for prayers and thanksgiving.

"This is actually to welcome the New Year for prosperity and good

health," explained one devotee.

The two temples have been organising joint temple celebrations for 20

years.

"Some of us Chinese also pray to the Hindu deity. So we have this

every year," said another.

The next time, the Hindus will be joining the Chinese in their temple

festival.
