Guest guest
LAOS PRESERVES ANCIENT LITERARY WORKS Vientiane,(VNA) -- With financial support from foreign donors, Laos has collected a variety of ancient literary works written in prose or verse on palm leaves nationwide for cultural preservation and development. This move was made within a project, jointly sponsored by Germany and the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO). Under the 1.21 million USD project, conducted at 830 pagodas of 17 provinces and cities nationwide, researchers have gathered 368,260 ancient palm leaves and 8.973 palm-leaf Buddhist books reflecting many historical, social and religious events inscribed in the country's ancient language. Over the past ten years, 12 stories on palm leaves have been re- written and published in numerous books with a total of 20,000 copies. The project proved to be very useful for studing Laos's ancient language, culture and arts as well as helpful for Buddhist monks and nuns to study the ancient Bali language and Lao culture at schools.-- Enditem
