Guest guest
Sunday February 2, 8:17 PM Hindu temple and mosque join in Chinatown Lunar New Year celebrations It was a wet Lunar New Year's eve on Friday. But Singapore's multi-racial spirit was not dampened, as a Hindu temple and a mosque joined in the Lunar New Year celebrations in Chinatown. Being in the centre of Chinatown, the Sri Mariamman Temple was all set to welcome the Year of the Goat. And it was specially decorated to blend in with the Chinatown festive light-up. Attracting shoppers every festive season, temple officials also decided to welcome its Chinese visitors in traditional Chinese style. "It is Chinese New Year Eve and we have a good number of Chinese who visit Chinatown. They just drop by. We welcome them and give them 2 oranges to wish them good luck," said Sri Mariamman Temple Chairman, T Chandroo. A special prayer for a drier New Year's day was also thrown in. "The arrangement is good because we should live as one big family," said young Pei Sui who turned up with her parents. And to prove just that, the mosque next door also put out banners wishing everyone a Happy Lunar New Year.
