'India must reconstruct Iraq gurdwara'

New Delhi, April 29: Jagmeet Brar (Congress) on Tuesday in the Lok

Sabha asked the government to take up the issue of reconstructing a

historic Gurdwara in Iraq which was destroyed during the recent US-

led war to overthrow the regime of Saddam Hussein.

Brar, who raised the issue during Zero Hour, was supported by many

members from his party.

The MP said the Gurdwara was associated with Guru Nanak, the first of

the Sikh Gurus, who had gone to Mecca and on the way back reached

Baghdad. Here he played Sufi music and sang hymns in parise of God.

Guru Nanak had defied the then rulers in Iraq who had banned music

from that country. In India, the ruler at the time was Babar.

Brar said Guru Nanak, was one of the greatest saints and fakirs that

the country has ever produced, and is revered equally by Sikhs,

Hindus and people from other religions. His followers are settled in

117 countries.

It was thus the sentiment of the vast majority of these people that

the government should do everything possible to rebuild the Sikh

shrine.

In this connection, Brar regretted a statement made by the Chairman

of the National Minorities Commission that there was no Gurdwara in

Iraq.

Vinay Katiyar (BJP) said the Gurdwara should not only be repaired but

developed further. However, no one should take political mileage out

of the issue.
