Guest guest
Untouchables and Hinduism Dear Editor, The article on India's caste system was well written yet its conclusions are inaccurate. While focusing on social injustice you forgot some very relevant facts. The foundation of Hinduism is it's host of Saints and Avatars. Even Scripture is only depended upon through the revelation of Guru. Every single Saint, Guru and Avatar such as Rama, Krishna, Shiva, Chaitanya all completely refute the idea of inequality based on any criteria. The very humanity of these figures is what real Hinduism is founded upon. Social injustice and inhumanity are a global dysfunction. They are not isolated to any one culture or country. Oppression, in any form, whether it be caste-ism, racism or economic, is against the traditions of Hinduism. To, therefore, blame the entire Hindu civilization for something that is against Hinduism itself, is unjust. The real solution to the caste system is for real Hinduism to be practiced. Declaring Hindu civilization unfit for political and social governance was quite a declaration. Ironically, the Hindu political party that currently rules India is built upon complete equality amongst castes. Like many ancient, indigenous cultures around the world, Hinduism is rediscovering its past and the benefits of the ancient traditions. It is the benefits of the ancient ways being revived by the Hindus themselves that is solving the social injustice called caste-ism. As the world's most ancient, ongoing and largest civilization, Hindus are definitely capable of fixing their own problems.
