Convention to protect places of worship

Malaysia

PETALING JAYA: The International Movement For a Just World (JUST) has

formulated a global convention to protect places of worship from

imminent destruction during warfare or armed conflict.

Its president Dr Chandra Muzaffar said JUST hoped that the

convention, named the International Convention on the Protection of

Places of Worship would also be ratified by all UN member nations.

He added that JUST would spend the next six months mobilising civil

society movements and groups around the world to get the support of

their respective governments to facilitate the UN's adoption of the

proposed convention.

He was speaking at a media conference yesterday attended by the

Archbishop of Kuala Lumpur Reverend Murphy Pakiam, Malaysian Hindu

Sangam President Datuk A. Vaithilingam, Malaysian Consultative

Council of Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism and Sikhism (MCCBCHS)

president Harcharan Singh, Buddhist chief high priest of Malaysia

Datuk Dr K. Sri Dhammananda, Malaysian Interfaith Network (MIN) co-

ordinator Dr John Gurusamy as well as representatives from Sisters In

Islam, Council of Churches and Muslim Youth Movement of Malaysia

(Abim).
