Guest guest Posted July 16, 2003 Report Share Posted July 16, 2003 Convention to protect places of worship Malaysia PETALING JAYA: The International Movement For a Just World (JUST) has formulated a global convention to protect places of worship from imminent destruction during warfare or armed conflict. Its president Dr Chandra Muzaffar said JUST hoped that the convention, named the International Convention on the Protection of Places of Worship would also be ratified by all UN member nations. He added that JUST would spend the next six months mobilising civil society movements and groups around the world to get the support of their respective governments to facilitate the UN's adoption of the proposed convention. He was speaking at a media conference yesterday attended by the Archbishop of Kuala Lumpur Reverend Murphy Pakiam, Malaysian Hindu Sangam President Datuk A. Vaithilingam, Malaysian Consultative Council of Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism and Sikhism (MCCBCHS) president Harcharan Singh, Buddhist chief high priest of Malaysia Datuk Dr K. Sri Dhammananda, Malaysian Interfaith Network (MIN) co- ordinator Dr John Gurusamy as well as representatives from Sisters In Islam, Council of Churches and Muslim Youth Movement of Malaysia (Abim).
