Two 'sciences' collaborate on quake forecasts

"Earth and Mars are drawing together for their closest approach in

some 60,000 years on August 27, 2003. Apart from that, the entire

planetary configurations are likely to become hostile to the world

from August 29."

NEW DELHI - Astrologers will pool their ability to foretell the

future with scientific know-how starting on Friday at a workshop

here aimed at creating an earthquake early warning system, an

official said.

Vijay Madan, an executive member of the Astrology Study and Research

Institute in Delhi, said astrologers and seismologists were keen to

share their expertise to be able to develop methods to forecast

quakes quickly and accurately.

"We have been planning this seminar-cum-workshop with astrologers

and scientists for over a year. We need to pool our expertise to

alert governments to impending eathquakes and natural disasters,"

Madan said.

"We consider astrology a science. Based on our scientific

astrological predictions governments can take precautions, mitigate

the fallout of earthquakes and put effective disaster management

plans in place."

Over a hundred astrologers and scientists, including seismologists,

will gather in New Delhi for the three-day meet to analyse data from

the powerful earthquake that killed 20,000 people in the western

Indian state of Gujarat on January 26, 2001.

"Scientists will analyse the seismic data recorded before the

Gujarat earthquake as well as during its aftermath. We will match

this with planetary configurations during the same period," Madan

said.

A book titled "Predicting Earthquakes and Calamaties," authored by

astrologer Lachhman Das Madan, will be released on Friday by India's

Human Resource Development Minister Murli Manohar Joshi during the

workshop.

"The contents of the book are secret. Wait for the book release,"

said the author, who is also president of the Astrology Study and

Research Institute.

"But I can tell you that according to my calculations earth will

face serious and violent convulsions in about a period of one month

(from) July 29.

"Earth and Mars are drawing together for their closest approach in

some 60,000 years on August 27, 2003. Apart from that, the entire

planetary configurations are likely to become hostile to the world

from August 29."

Das Madan pointed out that in the popular astrology

magazine "Babaji" (Holy priest), he had predicted that former Indian

premier Rajiv Gandhi would meet a "violent end" three months prior

to his May 1991 assassination by Sri Lankan rebels belonging to the

Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).

"It does not make me happy when sad predictions I utter come true. I

only make them so that people and especially the government can be

warned and can take the necessary precautions," Das Madan said.

But he had a happy one in store for Indian Prime Minister Atal

Behari Vajpayee, whom he predicted would lead the country and the

Hindu-nationalist BJP party to the zenith of its glory in his

bestselling paperback "India and its Leaders," published in 1969.

Vajpayee first became prime minister in 1996 - after four decades in

opposition. But his coalition government was weak, and he lasted

only 13 days as the country's premier. He was re-elected in 1999 at

the head of a more stable BJP-led coalition.
