Hoping to attract more domestic and foreign visitors, Orissa's tourism department has chalked out plans to landscape the beach, construct a promenade, build scattered seating and illuminate the shore in Puri, 56 km from this state capital, a top official said. "We are also planning to build public conveniences and kiosks for tea and snacks," the tourism official said. "At present such arrangements are not proper and systematic." The total cost would be Rs 47.8 million and the Central government has assured that it will pay Rs 39.2 million of this, the official said. The state government will bear the rest of the expenditure. Orissa's state-owned Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation will execute the project. The tourism department plans to gradually beatify all the beaches along the Bay of Bengal and the facelift for Puri marks the first phase, the official said. For centuries, Puri has attracted countless pilgrims and tourists, both Indians and foreigners. Puri is the abode of Lord Jagannath and is considered one of the most important Hindu pilgrimage destinations in India.
