It tracks and analyzes the content of these news channels and compares them on parameters like the number of fresh stories, the coverage of news, prioritization of news, importance given to different news categories, among others. “We are looking at the changes in content. Earlier, news was synonymous with politics, does that still hold? News used to be Delhi centric, how far has its coverage broadened? It used to be more optimistic in nature, what is the trend now? What kind of importance is being given to genres like sports news,” says Naveen Surapaneni, Director, Centre for Media Studies. Highlighting some top-line findings of the study, he says, “Looking at the results, we can say that the news channels could have prepared 20% of the programming in the last three weeks well in advance. In term of extent of coverage, news channels have broadened coverage but only to the extent of major metros. Majority of news channels are not looking at covering news beyond metros. Also, the findings reveal that they are sensationalizing news far more.” Targeted at media analysts, researchers as well as news channels, the syndicated study records and analyzes the quality, quantity and the focus of the different news channels. It tracks the news channels based on a set of variables, which have been determined by the research staff of CMS India. Set up in year 1991, CMS India is an independent, multi-disciplinary, research and development organization.
