India's leadership role in Asia received considerable attention here

on Monday during Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee's bilateral

meetings with Republic of Korea (ROK) President Roh Moo-Hyun and

Vietnamese Prime Minister Phan Van Khai. Moving between history and

the present, the South Korean President underlined India's leadership

role in the context of Korea's independence, subsequently in the Non-

Aligned Movement, and today in the field of Information Technology.

He also mentioned Korea's interest in India's traditional culture. In

the contemporary global context, the two leaders discussed the recent

United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) session, referring to the need

to strengthen the United Nations. In this context, the two discussed

the UN role in Iraq. President Roh's forthcoming visit to India next

year was also discussed....

 

Next year India and Korea celebrate 30 years of establishment of

diplomatic relations. Although consular relations between the two

were established in 1962, it was only in 1973 that relations were

upgraded to the Ambassador level. In the run-up to the celebrations,

In more recent history, India was Chairman of the nine-member UN

Commission set up to hold elections in Korea in 1947. Korea was also

not left untouched by Rabindranath Tago's poetry who in 1929

wrote: "In the golden age of Asia, Korea was one of its lamp bearers.

And that lamp is waiting, to be lighted once again, For the

illumination of the East."

 

 

 

President Roh's mention of cultural and historical ties with India

was an acknowledgment of this past even as the two sides reviewed the

current global economic imperatives for closer ties....
