No Hindu, only Indian; We are Secular

The VHP international general secretary, Mr Pravin Togadia, sought to

know why India was not acceding to a request from the Bali Governor

to help spread Hindu culture there. And how an official of the

external affairs ministry could ask the Bali Governor to substitute

the word "Hindu" with "Indian" as a condition for any help.

The suggestion of the Indian official to the Bali Governor was an

insult to Hindus and the Prime Minister should clarify how this could

happen, Mr Togadia said, while asserting that the VHP was ready to

help Bali if the government failed. How could the external affairs

ministry, which spends hundred of crores of rupees as aid, refuse to

aid the spread of Hindu culture, he asked.

He said the Bali Governor had in a letter asked the Indian government

to help the coming generation in his province better understand Hindu

culture and the various gods and goddesses. First there was no reply.

When the governor persisted, he was advised to replace the

word "Hindu" in the request letter with a more suitable phrase

like "cultural exchange" as India is a secular country, Mr Togadia

said.
