Guest guest
Islam seeks re-entry in Spain http://www.organiser.org/worldwindow.htm Spain is the only country in the world, which successfully met the challenge of medieval Islam. Under the great leadership of Queen Isabella and her husband Ferdinand, the king of Aragon, they not only successfully defeated Moors (The Muslims of North African origin) but also made them leave Spain, at the beginning of Modern age in the European history, five centuries back. Isabella ascended in 1478 AD and by the sheer force of her character and tact, she stimulated such patriotism among her people that a grand national unity was achieved and the Muslims had to leave the country. Emir Baobdil, the leader of the Moors kissed King Ferdinand's hand and left the city with the rest of is followers. Since that day five hundred years back, no new mosque was ever constructed in the land of Isabella, the great. With that event, began the modern age in Spain and the new forces of patriotism that were generated by the queen were later channeled in what is known as the age of discoveries. But in this age, when Islamic fundamentalism and its offshoot the Islamic terrorism are posing the greatest challenge to the civilised world, Islam is seeking re-entry in to Spain. A new mosque—first in five hundred years has been constructed and the town of Granada, where it is situated is the focus of Islamic attention. There are around fifteen thousand Muslims already in the town and it has an Islamic council also. Most of the Muslims here are Moroccan and Syrian immigrants and some are North African students but there are around one thousand converts also who are very much Europeans. Many of frustrated leftist intellectuals have also joined the ranks of Islam in post Franco Spain. All over Spain, Muslims would now number in tens of thousands, if a report in New York Times is believed. It is to be remembered that Spain is predominantly a catholic country. Even earlier, during the medieval ages many Christians had taken to Islam but with the onset of the modern age Islam was wiped out. Many of the neo- Muslims seek to see the medieval Muslim presence in Spain as their nostalgic golden age. Their movement according to the New York Times is marked by the visions of an Islamic Caliphate with an economy based on gold dinars. It is to be noted that immigration is gradually spreading Islam and also Islamic terrorism all over Europe. Great Britain is already suffering due to Islamic terrorists particularly of South Asian origin (remember Mirpuris?). The disintegration of Yugoslavia has added to European woes in this regard. The developments in Spain have their own problematic dimensions. A supposedly "homegrown movement" is adding to the problem already created by immigration and a handful of leftists in the land of Isabella and Ferdinand.
