Temples are the outlets of the omnipotent, omnipresent God.Temples

are inevitable for worship. Worship liberates one from the chain of

births and re-births. Constructing a temple is like performing a

Yagna. Even more so, renovating one is like performing "ASWAMEDHA

YAGNA by doing so, one's family is blessed for 21generations, says

the Scriptures.

An Ancient Lord Shiva Temple for Lord Uma Maheswarar and Goddess

Ambal, which is believed to be more than 1500 years old is situated

in small village named "MANNUR" , Near Poonamallee, Kanchipuram

district, of Tamil Nadu. This Village is on the Poonamalle -

Perambakkam main Road, 18kms from Poonamallee.

This temple is said to have been constructed during 6th centurty ie.

during the King Pallavas period. Subsequently it was renovated

during 11th Century. Some scriputres are there in Sanskrit and Tamil

near to the temple. Kanchi Mahaswamigal visited this temple during

1957. The temple was in a dilapidated condition and required

renovation as per the Agama Sastras.

There was no pooja for this temple. Lord Umamaheswarar in Lingam

form was there in an open area. On top of the wall, there was about

60 feet Pipal Tree (Arasa Maram)was there. There are Sixty three

beautiful ponds are there in the village indicating Sixty three

Nayanmars. Two of the ponds are on the southern and northern side of

this historic temple. In the Northern side pond beautiful lotus is

there.

When visited this temple the lingam was almost found under the

earth and only one feet was found outside the earth. Half of the

Avudayar was found outside and half found under the earth. We have

decided to have Balalayam in an auspicious day after that with the

help of the village people we have taken the Lingam outside which is

under the earth. The total height of the Lingam is 3 114 feet.

The Banalingam has been designed very beautifully. This is actually

three part. All the three parts have been designed in an equal

heights. The Avudayar which is around the Sivan is very beautiful.

Goddess Ambal has about 3 feet height with Astham Pasangusam. The

standing position of this Ambal is different from normal Ambal. Lord

Arumugam is on the peacock which is an unique feature of this

temple.

With the blessings of Sri Jayendra Saraswathi Swamigal" and "Sri

Vijayendra Saraswathi Swamigal" of Kanchi Kamakoti Peetham, the re-

construction work of the aforesaid temple commenced and is in the

final stage. Shri Vijayendra Saraswathi Swamigal of Kanchi Math had

sent a representative from Kanchi Math to see the condition of the

temple and collected information about the historic temple.

The temple is having Lord Shiva in Lingam form, Goddess Ambal and
