Guest guest
Lynch Promotes Meditation for Schoolchildren Mon, Aug 01, 2005, 04:08 AM PT LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - David Lynch, auteur of disturbing fare such as "Blue Velvet" and "Twin Peaks," would like to instruct children to achieve peaceful contemplation. The filmmaker has formed the David Lynch Foundation for Consciousness-Based Education and World Peace in hopes that schools will use transcendental meditation in the classroom. "It's knowledge in terms of the self and it works wonders in the kids," he tells the AP. "I'm convinced there are hundreds or thousands of kids who will see the truth of this and want to take part in one way or another." Lynch recently met with some students who practice the technique during a visit to Maharishi Vedic City in Iowa, the movement's spiritual center in the U.S. His foundation will provide scholarships for students in his programs as well as raise money for peace groups. He says that the technique will help students more effectively use their entire brain instead of just a part of it. Maharishi Mahesh Yogi introduced transcendental meditation to the U.S. in 1959, and currently one million Americans practice the technique. The relatively simple practice involves sitting with eyes closed for 20 minutes twice a day to achieve restful awareness. The movement claims that the technique will provide benefits ranging from increased creativity and higher IQ to reduced stress and increased happiness. The Oscar-nominated Lynch, 59, is also the director of "The Elephant Man,Wild at Heart,Lost Highway,Mulholland Drive" and the project he's currently filming, "Inland Empire." http://www.zap2it.com/movies/news/story/0,1259,---26403,00.html
