krAntvAnigIrya punarudgiriti tvadanya:

ka:kEnavaiSha paravAniti shakyashanka: ||

hara = rudra

virinchi mukha: = brahma

prapancha: = the world (this, that of brahma

and that of siva)

kasya udarE - in whose stomach were they present?

imam = this created world,

ka: rakshati? = who protects?

kasya nAbhE: = from whose navel

(imam) ajanishta - has (these) been generated?

tvath ananya: ka: = who elee other than you?

krAntvA : measured

nigIrya = swallowed (during dissolution - praLAya)

puna: again

udgirati = regurgitates (who manifests again?)

Esha: = All these

kEna vA = who else does it have?

paravAn = as its Lord?

iti = this

shakya shanka: - no doubt at all

tAtparya :

Where do all the worlds including Bramha, Rudra

and others get embedded in during dissolution?

Who is the One who protects everyone? After

dissolution, by whom do everything get created

again? There is absolutely no doubt that it is

srimannArAyana who is the Supreme Lord

of the universe.

Varadhan's note:

This slOka is very beautiful. This talks about

the power of the Lord during praLaya and during

the creation after that. THe key things here

are nigIrya punar udgirati = swallowing and

regurgitating. The AzhvArs express the same

concept in many places using the words

"uNdu umizhNdhu". the AzhvArs always attribute

the most absolute supremacy to the Lord. So,

they go even a step further - They say

"padaiththu idandhu uNdu umizhndu aLandhu" -

They teach us that the Lord has the power to

*create* souls as well (not just swallow

during praLaya and regurgitate after that

in the common sense of the word "creation")

see thiruvAymozhi - aaruyirEyO agalidam

muzhudhum padaiththu idandhu uNdu umizhndu

aLandhu.

ALavandAr tiruvadigalE saranam.
