Guest guest
SriMathe Ramanujaya Namaha: SriMadh Vara Vara Munaye Namaha: Acharyan Thiruvadigale Saranam: SriVenkatarya Thanayam TatPada Kamalasriyam | Vadularnava Purnendum Ramanuja Gurum Bhaje || Dear Guna and All, First-of-all, sorry for the delay to respond regarding sharing the kalyana guna ganas of Swami Mudaliandan. In fact I do not find words where to start with, but like to share whatever I know. Swami Mudaliandan was born in 1027 A.D at Pachhai Vaarana Perumal Sannidhi (referred to as "NazarethPettai" today) in Thondai mandalam, to Anandanarayana Dheekshidar and Nachiyaramman. Anandanarayana Dheekshidar did not have any children for a long time. He undertook a yatra to Thiruvengadam to worship Lord Thiruvengadamudayan and pray for a child. On his way at Thiruninravor, where he stayed overnight at Yeri Katha Ramar's sannadhi, Sriramar (Anandanarayana Dheekshidar's thiruvaradana perumal) appeared in his dream and instructed that he need not undertake yatra to Thiruvengadam for begetting a son as Thiruanandazvan(Adi Shesha, Five headed Serpent, on whom The Lord reclines ) has taken birth as Ramanujar in Sriperumbudur and that he (Lord) will be born as his son to serve Sri Ramanuja. It is believed that Perumal was very impressed by Thiruvananthazvan's kainkaryam as Lakshmana to him (Lord Rama) in Ramavatharam and wanted to taste kainkarya ruchi(Taste of Servitude) himself. Thus, when he was born as Krishna in Krishnavataram he performed kainkaryam to Balarama (Who in turn is Thiruvananthazvan's amsam). Not fully satisfied with this, when Thiruvananthazvan appeared as Sri Ramanuja in Kaliyuga, he was reborn as Mudaliandan and did kainkaryam to Sri Ramanuja and felt satisfied. Thus Mudaliandan is an amsam of Lord Rama. Nachiyaramman was the elder of Swami Emburumanar's two sisters. Hence Mudaliyandan is called SrI-ramanuja's BhaginEya (sister's son). Anandanarayana Dheekshidar named the child as Dasarathy. Dasarathy refers to Dasaratha's sons. This normally refers to Lord Rama. He was born in Vadamal Kulam, Vadhoola Gothram, Yajus sakhaai, Apasthamba Soothram in Prabava varusham, Chitra masam, Punarvasu natchatram. His other names are Ramanujan Ponnadi, Sri Vaishnana Serobooshanam and Ramanuja Paduka. The 'Tiruvadinilai' (= the sanctified mount of the footwear, The ~~ pAdukA ~~ of divinity and holy personages) of the Lord is named after Swami Nammazhvar as 'SrI-Sathakopam' or 'Sathari', and the tiruvadi-nilai of Swami Nammazhvar is known as Ramanujan. In the same vein, the pAdukA-pITham of svAmi emperumAnAr is referred to as 'mudali-ANDAn'. This honorofic is cited in the 'taniyan' of SrI ANDAn which goes :- "pAdukE yati-rAjasya kathayanti yad-AkhyayA tasya dASarathE: pAadav SirasA dhArayAam yaham". svAmi mudali-ANDAn is accordingly referred to as the rAmAnuja-pAdukA or yatirAja-pAdukA. The short name is simply 'ANDAn'. Guest guest
Sri: Srimathe Ramanujaya Nama: Dear BhAgavatas, A side note to Sri Shanthakumar's beautiful post. In Thirumalai the sannidhi of Sri Ramanujar was established with Swami Emperumanar's permission by his disciple Sri Anandazhvan. And Sri Ramanujar's thiruvadi nilai in that sannidhi is known as Anandazhvan. There are several interesting episodes of interaction between Sri Anandazhvan and Sri Ramanujar at Thirumalai. I am adding one of those in this mail, which I had posted in other some time ago. I will also post some of the other episodes later. This article was collected from an upanyasam by Sri PBA Swami on Thiruvengadamudaiyan. In his Tiruvandaadi, Sri Bhoothatthazhvaar describes an event occuring in the hills of Tirumalai as follows. perugu mathavEzham maappidikku munninRu irukaNiLamoongil vaangi arugiruntha thEn kalanthu neettum thiruvEngadam kaNdeer vaan kalantha vaNNan varai The description of nature in this paasuram is, in the Tirumalai hills, a male elephant in musth, pulls off a bamboo shoot, dips it in a honeycomb nearby and extends it to its female elephant. Tirumalai Ananthaazhvaar enjoyed this paasuram as follows. On one occasion when Sri Ramanuja visisted Tiruvengadam, the devotees there requested that he give a discourse on the meaning of Dvayam. Sri Ramanuja agreed and did so; however, he also included the meanings of Tirumantram and Carama SlOkam in the discourse and as such the discourse became lengthy. Upon seeing this, Ananthazhvar stated that on that day he understood the true meaning of Bhoothatthazhvar's paasuram, as follows. The male elephant in mast is a description of Sri Ramanujar - the mast is the tears in his eyes as he enjoys the divine words of Swami Nammazhvar ("paNdaru maaRan pasunthamizh aanantham paaymathamaay viNdida engaL raamaanusamuni vEzham"). The female elephant represents the devotees in the gathering. Moongil represents a delicious substance. Here it stands for dvayam. Amongst Tirumantram, Dvayam, and Carama SlOkam, Dvayam (mantra ratnam) is the most delicious to Sriman Narayana's devotees. Also, since Azhvar said a moongil with two eyes (knots), it represents dvayam with its two parts. The honey in the comb nearby refers to Tirumantram and Carama SlOkam near Dvayam. The word neettum (extend) refers to the fact that the discourse was extended because Sri Ramanuja added the meanings of Tirumantram and Carama SlOkam to the meaning of Dvayam. Thus the description of TiruvEngadam was that of Sri Ramanujar extending a lengthy discourse to His devotees on the meanings of Dvayam, Tirumantram and Carama SlOkam. Guest guest
Sri Parthasarathi thunai Srimathe Ramanujaya namaha Dear Sri TCA Venkatesan, Sri Ananthazhvan's explanation to the paasuram was superb. There are so many such instances in our Guru Paramparai which are nice to hear even when we know them earlier. please do keep posting more such anubhavangal of our beloved acharyas. I remember one instance where there is a dialogue between Sri Nanjeeyer and Sri Ananthazhvan. After taking Sanyasam Sri Nanjeeyer was going to SriRangam to meet his acharyan Sri Paraasara Bhattar. On his way he meets Thirumalai Ananthazhvan. Sri Ananthazhvan asked Nanjeeyer why he has taken up sanyasam for which Nanjeeyer replied because sanyasa ashrama is called as Moksha ashrama. Hearing this Sri Ananthazhvan gave an excellent reply. "vaErtha podhu kulithu pasitha podhu vunDu Bhattar Thiruvadigale gadhi endru erundal paramapada naadan tallividuvano?" (that is you live how ever you want, bath because it sweats and eat whenever hungry but keep saying onething that My Acharya is always there to protect me, then will paramapada nathan push you from srivaikundam?) This shows the great Acharya Bhakthi and faith that just surrendering to the acharyan will lead us to the Moksha. What greatness each acharyan in our Guru paramparai possesses!!! We can keep talking about them life long. Alwar Emperumanar Jeeyer Thiruvadigale Charanam Adiyen Ramanuja Dasyai Sumithra Varadarajan.
