Guest guest
SrImatyaI GodayaI Nama: Tommorrow is the sacred day of Thiru-Aadi -pUram .Thinking about the utsavams and vaibhavams some thoughts crossed my mind that i want to share with you on SrI Aandal's Vaazhi Thirunaamam .All errors are mine alone and members may excuse me for any misinterpretations ,and for my poor and elementary style of writing. tiruvADippUrattu jagattudittAL vAzhiyE ***************************************** The glory of this day is best summed up by the Upadesa Rathina Malai pasuram of Svami Manavala Mamunigal "periyAzhvAr peNpiLLaiyAi ANDAL piranda tiruvADip-pUrattin SIrmai, oru nALaikku uNDo? manamE uNarndu pAr, ANDALukku uNDAgil oppu idaRkum uNDu." Swami here uses the word Undagil ******** This word literally sums up the glory of Thiruvaadipooram When will there be a day comparable to Thiruvaadipooram?? Only when someone comparable to the greatness of Andal is born will there be a day comparable to Aaadipooram Svami Manavala Mamunigal further highlights inRO Thiruvaadippooram- emakkaaga anRO inghu ANdAL avatharitthaaL- Thayar SrI Andal out of her outmost compassion for us appeared on this sacred day for helping us to escape from the afflictions of samsaaram and direct us to the Divine Feet of emperumaan. Thiruppavai Muppadhaum cheppinaal Vaazhiye ******************************************** Vedaas are in Sanskrit and very difficult to understand. So out of Compassion Svaami Nammazhwar gave us the Tamil Marai-Dravida Vedam Thiruvaaymozhi. We know from some works that In the Earlier days especially around 12th to 15th century SrI Bhasyam and Bhagavad Vishayam Kalagshepams were very Popular. The passage of time has resulted in a decline in our mental faculties and abilities. In the current situation with the time constraints and circumstances in general we find it too extensive(more than 1000 verses) and difficult to follow thiruvaaimozhi which propounds the thathuvams of the vedas. So it is The work of Kothai Nachiaar the paamalai of 30 verses, the essence of Vedams that is popular today with many Bhagavathaas attending Thiruppavai upanyaasams in many places. This nool has been translated into many languages and is known by a lot of people in south India. Svami Periyavachaan pillai in the Vyakyanam for Thiruppavai has said One should recite the 30 pasurams of thiruppavai if that is not possible recite Cirram Sirukale Pasuram if the above is not possible at least remember and cherish that Sri Aandal took avatharam in Srivilliputtur on ThiruAadi pooram and blessed us with the 30 paasurams of Thiruppavai periyAzhvaar peRRedutta peN piLLai vAzhiyE ****************************************** This verse highlights the yettam of Periyazhwar and Thayar. It is mentioned in the puraanam "Vishnuchittam munim drushtva sa pranamam karushyati" On seeing Vishnuchitta muni(periyazhwar) Thayar bowed down before periyazhwar and offered respects Then Periyazhwar saw Thayar and took Thayar in his arms When bHoomi piratti had to take an avatharam Emperuman decided Vishnuchittar to be right choice under whose care he could leave Bhoomi Piratti among all his GREAT devotees in the Kali yugam. Periyazhwar one of lord's dearest devotees used to tend his garden with extreme care and devotion. The flowers tended by Aazhwar due to his devotion had a special fragrance which he lovingly presented to Bhagavaan.Extremely pleased with his devotion and kaimkaryam Emperumaan presented Azhwar with a maalai-Godai. Thus Periyazhwar "won over the privilege" to be the father of Thayar Thayar as Azhwar's daughter is repeatedly emphasised and celebrated by our acharyas.Thayar herself talks about the glory of Aazhwar like in the Varanamaayiram pasuram. vEyar pugazh villiputtUr kOn kodai kothai daughter of PeriyAazhwar who is of unmatched fame( Veyar pugazh villiputtur kon) Svami Desikan Starts the Goda stuti with the line "SrivishNuchittha kulanandana kalpavaleem" Svami Manavala Mamunigal's slokam goes as "periyAzhvAr peNpiLLaiyAi ANDAL" The grace showered by Emperumaan to periAazhwar is immense 1)He presented Godai to Azhwaar 2)He appeared before Azhwar at Madurai 3)He made Aazhwar share the same simmasanam with Him and Thayar Perum pudoor mAmunikku pinnAnAL vAzhiyE *************************************** This Vaazhi Thirunamam refers SrI Aandal as being the younger sister of Udayavar even though Swami Emperumanaar appeared at a much later date after the Thiruavatharam of Thayar. This is related to the event when Swami Came to Srivilliputtur after the offering to Lord Sundararaja Perumaal at Thirumaalirumsolai .Smt Sumitra Varadarajan had written very nicely about this Vaazhi Thirunanam few days ago. Just would like to say that Svami came to be known as "Koyil Annan" after this incident.Svami is popularly known as "Koyil Annan" in Srivilliputtur. Usually we see that in all Srivaishnava temples and Divya desams the utsavamoorthy's are just one or two feet in front of the moolavar. In the Aandal Temple at Srivilliputtur we see that the utsavamoorthy's Andal Rangamannar and Garudazhwar are probably more than 15 feet in front. This feature is due to the above incident Swami Thiruvarangathu Amudhanaar in iRamaanusa noorandhadhi 16th paasuram has submitted how Swami Ramanujar always lived with the paripoorna Thiruvarul of Thayar in his entire avatharam. "arangar mouLi SuzhginRa maalaiyaic cudik koduttavaL tol aruLaal vAzhginRa vaLLal iraamAnuSan ennum mAmuniyE" Oru nooRRu nARpattu mUnRuraittAL vAzhiyE ***************************************** This Vaazhi Thirunamam salutes the work of 143 paasurams by Thayaar- The Nachiyaar Thirumozhi. Thayar teaches us in the nool that the bliss of uninterrupted Bhagavad anubhavam and kaimkaryam is the ultimate thing that we should strive for. Svami Desikan in the Prabhandasaaram slokam on Goda devi submits the following(concluding lines) "nee uraittha thaiyoruthigat paa maalai Aayapugaz nooRudanaaR patthu moonRum AnbudanE adiyEnukku aruL sey neeyE" Please bless me with the special arthams of the paamalai of 143 versers that starts from thai oru thingalum-Naciyaar Thirumozhi Uyar arangaRkE kaNNi ugandu azhaittAL vAzhiyE ************************************************* Arangan Lord Ranganathan who reclines majestically at Thiruvarangam Uyar Arangan Lord Rangarajan, the lord of all the worlds, onmnipresent, omnipotent and omniscient, the master and controller of everything Uyar aranganukke **** to the great lord himself The Lord is the greatest of all,in that case can anyone else cause or effect anything so that his greatness would be further increased?? How can it be when He is the ultimate in greatness?? uyar arangannukke kanni ugangathu alaithaal By marrying SrI Ranganathar Sri Andal increased the glory and auspiciousness of Sarveswaran SrI Ranganathan. Just as a side think that the great lord whose lotus feet all the world yearns for, lifted and placed Thayars feet on the grinding stone during their Thirukkalyanam MaruVaarum Thirumalli Vaazhanadu Vaazhiye ****************************************** Glory to SrI Villiputtur the bountiful land permeated by fragrance. Thiru Malli Nadu is Srivilliputtur-The land ruled by the queen Malli The reference "Malli Nadu" occurs in many places like the thanian on Nachiyar Thiromozhi by tirukkaNNa mangai ANDAn Svaami Malli Nadu Aaanda Madamayil-referring to SrI Andal who ruled Malli Nadu. MaruVarum Thirumalli Vazhanadu- The ever fragrant, prosperous and bountiful Land of Malli Nadu (Srivilliputtur) Another name for for this town SrIvilliputtur is "Shenbagaaranyakshetram" The Land of the Shenbaga forest. Srimad Bhagavatham mentiones the Vrinda forest "vrinda ban" permeated by the sweet fragrance of flowers ,so is Srivilliputtur permeated by the sweet fragrance of the Shenbaga and other flowers of the shenbaga forest. This forest was supposedly filled with wide variety of shrubs, plants etc.Even today one can visit a place called shenbagathoppu at the foothills of the western ghats around 15 kms from Srivilliputtur.I have read about The PaTTa for the land of around 250 acres in shenbagathoppu being in the name of Nachiyaar(Thayar). The Garlands worn by Thayar are even today offered to VatapatrasayI perumaal ..The fragrance that permeates SrI villiputtur is due to the garlands that perumaal wears after it is worn by godai. vaN puduvai nagark kOdai malarp padangaL vAzhiyE ************************************************ Glory to the sacred lotus feet of Andaal which are always our refuge. Swami Desikan in the first slokam of Goda stuthi says "Godaam ananyasarana: Saranam prapadhye" For one who has no other refuge I seek you(Thayar) as my sole refuge. Vanamamalai Svami in the Tanian "Kolasuri Sangai" for Nachiyar Thirumozhi says madippuDaiya sOlaikkiLi, avaL tooya naRpAdam tuNai namakke Her Sacred feet are always our refuge Thayar and Perumaal will mount the thEr tommorrow morning around 4:30 am and will bless thousands of devotees in the ThEr Let us also remember and meditate on Thayar's sacred tiny feet covered with Kungumam ,pray that it stays in our mind always and be the recipient of the grace and blessings of the Divya dampathis. I am reminded of the popular lines from the Oonjal Song rendered most wonderfully by Sadagopa Nambi Svami during the Oonjal Sevai "Aaadi Poorathil udhitha Andalum Kothaaii.. Ani Arangan Amarndhu Oonjal Aaadinalee " SrI Aandaal Thiruvadigale Sranam adiyen Ramanuja dasan Venkat S Iyengar ________ Win a First Class Trip to Hawaii to Vacation Elvis Style! http://r.lycos.com/r/sagel_mail/http://www.elvis.lycos.com/sweepstakes
