SRIMATHE RAMANUJAYA NAMAHA

APPAN THIRUVADIGALE SARANAM

This is in continuation of earlier posting.

Sutra. 104. What is the reason for this Bhakti? A long passage depicting the

efforts of Emperuman towards jeevan who is toiling in samsara. is this sutra.

PATHI UZHAVAN KRUSHI PALAM.

(Result of Bhakti Farmer)

Prakruthi (samsara) is limitless It is the place where jeevas enjoy, suffer and

toil due to their actions. It is the place from which release (Moksha) is

desired. The mind of jeevan is the soil wherein bhakti is sowed.

Sensual organs have taken over the control of the mind and make the jeevan to

get involved in worldly pleasures. There is no end to these experiences offered

by them. . The jeevan enjoys and suffers a lot and does not know a way to get

out of the situation. The mind remains as a spoilt one with out the cultivation

of bhagavat bhakti . The entire time is spent on worldly pleasures and Atma

gnanam is lost.

Emperuman has set his attention on this jeevan with an intention to redeem

him. He

Wishes to change the mind of the jeevan towards him by cultivating bhakti in

him. It is a very difficult task to wean away the jeevan from sensual pleasures.

He slowly turns the mind away from such pleasures. He ultimately eliminates

their influences completely and makes the mind suitable for devotion towards

him He promises the Jeevan.

“Place your trust in me completely” (MAM EKAM SARANAM VRAJA’)

“I will relieve you from all sins that stands in the way to reach me”(SARVA

PABEBYO MOKSHAISHYAMI)

“Do not worry” (MASUCHAHA’)

The mind of jeevan, which was thickly covered by lust etc., due to his various

actions, is now cleared.

Now the jeevan is ready to do, as Emperuman desires.

(“STHITHOASMI GHATHASANDHEHAHA :KARISHYAMI VACHANAM THAVA”)

“ My doubts are cleared. I will do as you say” is the answer of Jeevan.

The Emperuman’s action (cultivation) is described below.

The mind is like a field removed of all weeds and scorched by fire ready for

cultivation. (MARUVI THOZHUM MANAM THANTHU)

Made the field rich with manure (URAR KAVVAI ERUVAI ITTU…When the jeevan has set

his mind to worship emperuman, people has understood that this jeevan has become

a bhagavathan)

Irrigated it .( gave knowledge for devotion to lord)

Made it suitable for sowing (KANNANUKKE ENRU EERIYAY IRUPPAL..Always thinking

of the lord)

Sowed with wet seeds (imparted the knowledge that Atma is dependentant on

Emperuman always)

Removd the weeds (removed the egotism “I”, “Mine”, “ I do”. )

( NEER NUMATHU ENRIVAI VERMUDHAL MAYAITHU)

Kept a watch over the growth (Sense organs may interfere and make the mind goes

astray

When the plants grow

Animals may destroy the plant

Thieves may rob

The pants are to be protected from these dangers

When the yield has ripened (now the Atma has ripe for release from samsara)

Action is to be taken to harvest before the grains fall to the ground

(Karmas that stand in the way for release are removed)

(VINAI PARRU ARUKKUM….Periya Thirumozhi 11.4.9)

Just like separating grains from the stalk

(Removing the desire for Atmanubhavam as against Baghavathnubhavam)

(ARUL ENNUM THANDAL ADITHU..(PERIYA THIRUVANTHATI. 26)

The grains are taken home and made ready for food.

The Peasant enjoys the food.

Similarly the Atmas is taken to paramapadam via archaradhi marga and enjoyed by

Emperuman.( Here the details given in the Sutra have been shortened for easy

understanding)

Ultimately, the point that it is Emperuman who takes effort for the cultivation.(

jeevan’s release from samsara) is explained in detailed in this sutra.

Sutra. 105. Well it is understandable that Emperuman takes efforts. But, Why it

is for Azhvar alone. There seems to nothing special in him for this benefit; Are

there similar instances?

YES. (Ayodhiyil vaazhum chracharm murravum Onrinriye narpaalukku

uyithanan..TVM. 7.5.1) All the living things of Ayodhya without any exception

were bestowed with benefits)

Because, they loved Rama dearly. They were happy in the company of Rama. They

became sad when he was separated from them.

Similarly, during Krishnavatharam, all living things, gopis, birds, trees

animals though they may not have sufficient knowledge, loved Krishna very much.

When animals, trees and shrubs can love Emperuman should there be any reason for

Azhvar’s bhakti. When Emperuman can be instrument for the love in others it can

happen in the case of Azhvar also.

Sutra 106. The actions of Royal elephant and Emperuman are beyond question.

The Royal elephant designated to select a heir in the case of a king who dies

without a ward can garland any body, as it likes to become the successor to the

throne. That was the custom in olden days. Emperuman who has no one superior to

him can do, as he likes.

Sutra. 107. All right. There may not be any good deed done by him based on which

Emperuman has chosen for his grace. Perhaps there my be some deeds done by him

without intention that can be termed as deeds befitting Emperuman’s grace.

Azhvar has described the various deeds of Emperuman in various Avathars These

Avathars were to protect his devotees and destroy evil doers. But, Azhvar has

not done anything that warranted emperuman’s grace. Had there been any such

thing he would have mentioned that also. Not only that he has specifically

mentioned ‘VERITHE ARUL CHEYVAR CHEYVARKATKUGANTHU’ (TVM.8.7.8 ) He will

grant to whom he likes without any reason.

Sutra. 108. Though there may not be any good deed of Azhvar that merits

Emperuman’s grace his likes and dislikes may be as result of some good deeds.

This suggestion is also not acceptable: for the reasons

Azhvar himself has declared in Thiruvaimozhi

( VATTARARKU EN NANRI CHEYTHENO EN NENCHIL THIKAKAZHVATHUVE….TVM.10.6.8)

“What have I done to the Lord of Thiruvattar to remain in my mind?

(ENNAI THEEMANAN KEDUTHAYI..TVM 2.7.8)

“You destroyed my evil mind”

(MARUVI THOZHUM MANME THANTHAYEE….TVM.2.7.7

“You gave me the mind to choose and worship you”

we can infer that these gifts of Emperuman to Azhvar are not the results of

actions.

Sutra 108. Emperman reacts to “paramabhakti” Likewise Emperuman may present

himself for thoughts about him. Perhaps that may be the reason.

THIS SUGGESTION IS ALSO DENIED. IN THIRUVAIMOZHI (BELOW)

(NENCHE KARUMANGAL VAYKINRU OOR ENNTHANUM INRIYE VANDHIYALUMARU

...KANDAAYE” TVM. 1.10.5

“Oh! Mind have you seen that things are happening with out any intention ”
