SRI ALAVANDAR VAIBHAVAM-3

The queen, with great happiness welcomed Yamunai Thuraivar into their grand

palace. The king as per the challenge, granted half of his kingdom to YT and

sent word for his wife. And thereafter, YT settled with his wife in the palace

and enjoyed all the luxuries of the royal life.

Meanwhile, ManakkAl Nambi with very great interest of seeing YT, visited his

palace. But due to security restrictions around the palace, his wish remained

unfulfilled. He then visited the Palace kitchen and enquired about the food

item, which Aalavandar liked the best. He came to know that Aalavandar liked a

variety of spinach by name "Thoothulai". Nambi thereafter began to supply the

same for the palace kitchen. He continued this routine for a period of six

months and stopped the practice without any notice for a period of four days.

YT, while eating asked the cook, why he hasn't prepared "Thoothulai" for the

past four days. The cook replied "an old Brahmin was supplying the greens for

the past six months and he hasn't turned up for the past four days". Aalavandar

in turn asked the cook to inform him, whenever the Brahmin returned back.

Nambi, returned the next day with the Thoothulai and the cook informed

Aalavandar about the Brahmin's arrival. Aalavandar in turn instructed the cook

to bring the brahmin in front of him.

The cook directed Nambi to Aalavandar and he in turn welcomed him with due

respects and offered him a seat. He asked Nambi the reason behind the supply of

Thoothulai to the palace kitchen for the past six months and whether he is

interested in wealth or land in reciprocation. For this Nambi replied, he is

not interested in any material acquisition from Aalavandar, but instead he in

turn has a wealth in possession, which belonged to Aalavandar's ancestors. He

also knows the place where the wealth is available and Alavandar had to make

rrangements to remove all security restrictions for his entry into the palace,

till all the wealth is transferred to him. Aalavandar agreed to this and from

that day onwards, Nambi preached Aalavandar the divine meanings of all the

Eighteen chapters of Bhagavat Gita. Aalavandar got so deeply involved in

Nambi's teachings that he one day asked, whether there is a way by which he

could have the darshan of emperuman, the divine lord. Nambi in turn replied,

indeed there is a way and taught him the "meimai peruvArthai, charma slokam.

Listening to this, Aalavandar, like a grain that bends more and more on

ripening, started realizing the importance of sharanAgathi. Moreover, due to his

deep involvement with Bhagavan and Bhagavat vishayam, he slowly started getting

aloof from the samsAram. As per, “Nacha Jyanasya sangkOcha: na chaiva yama

socharaha:- tasmath rangam mahA punyam konaSEVEtha buddhimAn” Nambi, then took

Aalavandar to Srirangam and made him to have the darshan of Periya Perumal and

prostrate before the lord. He then remarked to Aalavandar that “This is the

wealth your ancestors had saved for you – ‘NidhiraVyaya:’ Aalavandar on

enjoying the endless beauty of the lord, felt distressed, for having spent his

past days in worthless pleasures and tears began to roll down his eyes as per

the verses “Pazhudhe Pala pagalum pOyinaVendru, anji azhudEn aravanaimEI kandu

thozhudEn” Having the supreme anubhavam of perumal, he shed all other samsAric

pleasures and undertook sanyAsa. (“PirandhaAr pirandhaidhum Perinbhamellam

turandhAr thozhudhAr Aththol”) Like ThiruPPAnAzhwar who said “andar kOn

aniarangan en amudhinai kanda kangal mattrondrunai kAnAdhE” (meaning he didn’t

want to see with his eyes, anyone else, after having enjoyed the supreme nectar

of Sri Ranganathan) Alavandar too, stayed with the same determination in

SriRangam itself for enjoying the endless anubhavams of Periya Perumal.
