vaShaTkAraha

(star-aShwini)

Jai Sriman Narayana

vaShaT karOti iti = The one who has everything under His control.

pASuram : nAcchiyAr Tirumozhi - 3-1 (AnDAL TiruvaDigaLE SaraNam)

samanvayam with pASuram : Leaving our clothes (divya dEhams) on the bank, we

have entered this pond (samsAram) in the dark (due to our ajnAnam). You have

kept our clothes with you. As the sun has come out, we can come out of the pond

only if you give us our clothes. By stealing our clothes, you have kept us all

under your control. So the name, 'vaShaTkAra' aptly fits onto you.

pASuram :

kOzhi azhaippadan munnam | - Before the hen signalled the morning.

kuDaindu nIrADuvAn pOndum | - We have come to take bath in the lake.

azhiyan Selvan yezhundAn | - The ball like sun has dawned.

aravaNai mEl paLLikonDAi | - You are sleeping on the Adi SEShA.

yezhmai attivum paTTOm | - We have strained ourselves a lot.

ini yenrum poigaikku vArOm | - Never shall we come to this lake again.

tOzhiyum nAnum tOzhitOm | - I along with my friend, bow to you.

tukiLai paNittu aruLAyE | - Kindly grace us with our clothes.

Detailed Meaning :

1) Before the hen signalled the morning :

Before our AchArya had warned us.

How the hen can be taken to be an AchArya?.

a) AchArya picks up the kaLyANa guNAs of the Lord from the vEdAs and enjoys them

just like the hen searches and picks the food grains.

b) The hen has two wings. Similarly, AchArya has two wings, one jnAnam and the

other anuShThAnam. Using these wings, the AchArya flies to great heights.

2) We have come to take a dip in the lake :

We have come to take a dip in this lake called samsAram.

3) The round & opulent sun has dawned :

Sunlight sets in with the sun rise. This light is the light of knowledge. After

getting this knowledge, we have realized, in what kind of a terrible state we

are in.

4) You are sleeping on the AdiSESha. We have strained ourselves a lot :

We require our clothes to come out of this lake. You have kept our clothes with

you and have confined us to this samsAram. You have to give us our clothes, for

us to come out.

That day, you went and sat on a tree with our clothes. Today, you are happily

sleeping on the AdiSEShA in SriRangam. But here we are being troubled by the

cold water and the bites of the fish in the water. That day, you sat on the tree

just for a short period of time. Now, you have been sleeping for ages happily in

SriRangam. You have no trouble. We are immersed neck deep in this water and are

suffering.

Thus you have kept us all under your control. So, we are expressing our anguish

by calling you, 'vaShaTkAra'.

5) We will never come to this lake again :

We thought that the happiness that we can get by entering this lake is more than

that, which we can get due to your samSlESham. We were wrong. Forgive us. We

have fully realized our folly. Never shall we get back into this lake.

6) I along with my friend (fellow women) bow before you :

What else can we do other than this?. We pray to you - Om vaShaTkArAya namaha

7) Kindly grace us with our clothes :

Kindly grace us with our divine bodies, which are bhOgyam to you. There is

nothing which we can give in return to you. We can only pray to you.

We have to suffer in this samsAram, till we are graced by you. Our Anandam is in

your control.

Before you give us our clothes, we are under your control. After we get our

clothes (divya dEhams) from you, we become bhOgyam to you. A thing which is

bhOgyam to its owner is always under His control. Thus, we have been, we are and

we will continue to be under your control always.

Who else, other than you, can we call by the name 'vaShaTkAra'?..

Om vaShaTkArAya namaha
