Sri ILaiyAzhwAr Vaibhavam-1

 

Periya thirumalai Nambi, one of the prime sishyas of Aalvandar, was cherishing

his kainkaryams (services) under the divine lotus feet of ThiruvengatamudaiyAn

as per the words of Alwar “Venkataththai padhiyAga vAzhvErgAl”. He had two

sisters, namely Sri Bhoomi Piratti and Sri Periya Piratti. Among them the elder

sister, Sri Bhoomi pirAttiayAr was wedded to one Sri Asoori Kesava perumal, a

sarva kradhu dheekshidhar, in Sriperumbudur. The younger sister, Sri Periya

pirAttaiAr was wedded to kamalanayana bhattar, of Mazhalaimangalam belonging to

vattamani kulam. As per the verse, “Ananda: prathamam roopam, lakshmanascha

thatha: Paraha – Balabadhras tridheeyas kalow kaschit Bhavishyathi.”

ThiruvanandhAzhwan who took birth as Ananda, Lakshamana and Balaraman in the

previous yugas decided to take birth in kali yuga, to uplift all the jeevathmas.

Like Ramadivakarar (Rama) and Achyuta Bhanu (Krishna) who chose Kausalya

mother’s and Devaki matha’s wombs respectively to take birth (avatar), Adishesha

chose the womb of Sri Bhooma pirAtti of Sriperumbudur to be born as Ramanuja

divAkarar.

 

“sruthir nasthA smrithir lupthA prAyEna pathi thathvijA:-

AngAnicha ViseernAni hAvriththO VarththathE kali:”

 

As said in the above verse, kali was ruling the world (Erul tharum nyAlam) when

Sri Ramanuja, to fight the kali, (“kaliyum kedum kandu konmin; kalierul neengi

periya kidayugam pattri pErinbhavellam perugumpadi”) took birth in accordance to

a date called “Theerlaptha” in the year 939, pingala samvatsara, chitra

maasam(month), sukla paksham, panchami thithi, in the star of guru,

ThiruvAdhirai subhamugurtham.

 

Sri Asoori Kesava Perumal did Jatakarmam on the occasion of the birth of his

divine son who has taken birth to uplift the masses. Coming to know about this,

Periya Thirumalai Nambi went to Sriperumbudur and conveyed his hearty wishes to

the newborn and his parents. He also revealed, “as this child is filled with

all lakshanas, he will learn and become well versed in all the sastras. Hence

he is eligible to be named after Elaya Perumal, famously known as LakshmanO

lakshmi sampanna:” Then on the twelfth day, he performed the thiruvilachinai

(symbol marking) ceremony first and then did the namakaranam. He named the

child as “Elaiyazhvar” according to the verse, “Dakshinanthu bhujam poorvam

chakrEna pradhapEchisO: - VamAm sampradha bheth paschAth sankE naiva

dvijOthamaha:” After this, Annaprashnam, sowlopanam etc were also done in the

respective time periods as per the shastras.

 

ElaiAzhwar then learnt the sastras along with angAs and upa-angAs and became a

chaturdasa vidhyApArangan and shodasa kalApoornan and then he accepted the

gruhatAshramam (he got married).
