Sri:

Srimathe Ramanujaya Nama:

Sri Pillai Lokacharya's

Mumukshuppadi

Sutra:

162. upAyAntharangaLai vittu caramOpAyaththaip paRRinAp

pOlE upEyAntharamAna aisvarya kaivalyangaLai vittu

ellaiyAna prApyaththai arththikkiRadhu.

Meaning:

In the first part of the mantra, the siddhOpAya (His

being the means and the end), which is above all other

means such as Karma, Gnyana and Bhakti, was seeked.

Similarly in this part of the mantra, the other goals

such as wealth and knowledge of the self are rejected

and the final goal (service), that is above all these,

is seeked.

Sri PBA Swami's Sarartha Deepikai:

Why should other goals be rejected and this (service)

be seeked?

Seeking the last of the means (siddhopayam) while

giving up other means such as Karma, Gnyana and

Bhakti is appropriate to the chetana whose nature

is that of not having any other means.

Similarly, in praying for the goal, seeking the last

goal (service to Him) while rejecting other ends

such as wealth and knowledge of the self is

appropriate to the chetana whose nature is that of

not having any other enjoyment.
