Guest guest
Sri Krishnaya Namah! Respected Bhagavathas, I have few clarifications as below, to seek from your goodself: 1. What is Gayatri Manthra - is it more to do with the Lord (Surya/Vishnu or whoever we pray) when we do Sandhyavandanam or is it Gayatri - a lady whom Lord Brahma married when Saraswathi was not there while performing a Yagna. 2. What is the significance of this manthra. Why is it accorded so much importance that even Ashtakari manthra has to be chanted only after this manthra japam. 3. Is this manthra ageless - i.e., does it got prominence only after sage vishwamithra chanted this or was it prominent over yugas and kalpas. 4. While the manthra drasta is sage vishwamitra who is the Lord for this manthra. 5. Why is it enjoined with other manthras like - vishnu gayathri manthra etc., Please enlighten me. Guest guest
Radhe Krishna, Gayatri is a meter in which a mantra is set.so any mantra set in this meter is called gayatri.eg.vishnu gayatri, laxmi gayatri. Guest guest
Sri Krishnaya Namah! Thanks for your valuable time. This means that this manthra is to invoke "savitramandala madhyavarthi", i.e, Lord Srimannarayana. Sukumar Sri Krishnaparabrahmane Namah! Dear SrImAn Sukumar, As some bhAgavatas have clarified, it is only meter (chandas). however, some people visualize gAyatrI as a female deity wielding kapAlam (skull) etc. this deity is not Mrs brahmA but the mother of evrybody including nArAyaNa! > > 2. What is the significance of this manthra. Why is it accorded so much > importance that even Ashtakari manthra has to be chanted only after this > manthra japam. ashtAksharI mantra japam most of our AchAryas do not prescribe. even gAyatrI mantra japam is not from sampradAyam point of view but we are supposed to chant it since it is a prescribed duty for us i.e. brAhmaNas. SrImad ashtAksharI mahA mantra is far above gAyatrI according to AchArya hrudayam. we are supposed to chant ashtAksharI only once during guru paramparA dhyAnam. gAyatrI mantra is given a beautiful explanation by one of our AchAryas in his sanskrit commentary on rAmAyaNa called "gOvindarAjIyam". This explanation hints that He is the cause of our thoughts and actions and we do not have any freedom. this is in accordance with SrI bhattar's ashtaSlOkI vyAkhyAnam. rAmAnuja dAsan Vishnu > > Sri Krishnaparabrahmane Namah! Guest guest
Dear Shri Sukumar, Few more information that I know of regarding these manthrams. Every manthram is associated to three components: a) a Rushi who was made to realize the manthram i.e the vedi seer b) a deity associated with the meter and c) a Devatha who is worshipped directly via that Manthram In Sandhya Vandhanam, we say Pranavasya Rushi Brahma (Brahma is the Rushi) Devi Gayathri Chandhaha (Gayathri for the Chandas) Savitha Paramathma Devatha (The deity of worship is the ruler of the Savithru Mandalam - Surya Narayanan) While reciting Sahasranamam, before we start we say: Vedavyaso Bhagavan Rushi Anushtup Chandhaha Shri Mahavishnu Paramatma Shriman Narayano Devatha The above is self explanatory. There are additional components to a manthram too. The Beejam(the root seed Syllable), The Shakthi(energy), and various angams of the manthram. Gayathri means many of those manthrams that has the Gayathri as the Chandas. The one in the Sandhyavandhanam(actually two) is usually the de-facto Gayathri because many of us know more about it than any other Gayathri. As per Varnashrama Dharmam(am just telling the fact, don't mistake me for stating the fact), this should be recited only the male members of the Brahmana, Kshatriya, Vaishya castes who have undergone the ceremony of Yagnyopaveetham i.e has entered or gone through the Brahmacharya phase. It is also said that in Kali yugam, pretty much everyone would recite this manthram. Whereas Ashtakshari is the one that reveals certain knowledge about the Atman and Paramatman.
