One day Bhattar was worshipping the Lord by doing fan

service to Him in a mandapam. As it was getting to be

sunset time, his disciples reminded him that the time

for sandhyavandanam was slipping.

 

Bhattar replied "For those who are in His service,

sins for missing sandhyavandanam and other rituals do

not apply".

 

That is, for Srivaishnavas, doing the daily rituals and

karmas while missing His service is against their nature.

Dear devotees,

Another incidence of Bhattar registered in my mind.

Bhattar must have been hardly 3/4 years old and father Sri

kUraththAzhvAn sent bhattar to veda class. First day,bhattar went and

then the second day AzhvAn saw bhattar playing with other kids

instead of attending the veda class. When AshvAn asked bhattar "why

didn't you attend the veda class?", bhattar replied:"They chant the

same thing again and again and it is very boring. That's why I didn't

go". So,AzhvAn said,"if that be the case,why don't you recite what

they taught you yesterday?" Bhattar,to AzhvAn's amazement, also

recited without making any mistakes in intonation.

 

AzhvAn and ANdAL decided taht it's better not to send

bhattar to veda class! If bhattar goes at this rate,he will not spare

anyone in scholarly debates and conversation at this young age

itself:-) So let him play freely and we can send him to veda class

later. It's amazing and awesome how bhattar used to come up with

instantaneous and extempore anecdotes in the form of beautiful

samskrt slokas. It looks like bhattar had answers even before the

question was sown in the mind! When we read bhattar's vaibhavam,we

find it very hilarious yet endowed with knowledge and devotion. If

bhattar could beat even the Lord of Arangam in conversation,then the

rest are all a "piece of cake" for him.
