I have enjoyed this pAsuram whenever I think or recite this. Shall i take the privilege of drawing a more or less similar pAsuram: "aravam adal vEyam Ankurundham puLvAi kuravai kudamulai maRkunRam- karivinRi vittirundhu, mEAithosithu kEndu kOthAdi vuNdu attedutha, sengan avan" mudhal thiruvandhAdhi 54 To be readjusted as: aravam vittirundhu adal vEyam iruthu An mEithu kurundham osithu puLvAi kENdu kuravai kOthu kudam Adi mulai vuNdu mal attu kunRam eduthu. aravam vittirindhu: - drove away the kAlian; adal vEyam iruthu - vanquishing the elephant kuvalaiyApEtam A(n) mEithu - Taking care of the cows; kurundham osithu - destroying the demon in the form of kurundham; puLvAi kENdu - bakAsura vadham; kuravai kOthu - rAsak krEdai kudam Adi - kudak kUthu mulai vuNdu - bhUdhanai s mulai ( vuyir ) vuNdu mal attu - killing the wrestlers kunRam eduthu - picking up the goverdhana giri. Great poetic sense indeed. The gramattical greatness has already been explained by sri. vasudevan swami. I am able to realise the value of the words of swAmi maNavALa mAmunigaL 'mARRuLla AzhwArgaLukku munnEA vandhudhithu nAthamiyAl nAttai vuytha" vupadhEsa rathinamAlai. Great indeed dhAsan vAnamAmalai padmanAbhan ______________________ ______________________ Message: 2 Sat, 20 Sep 2003 20:11:34 +0530 nsp Special pAsuram -1 Dear Srevaishnavites, I reproduce below the write up on a special pasuram posted by sri MG.Vasudevan. I am givning my posting in the next posting. dhAsan vAnamamalai padmanabhan Dear sri vaishNava perunthagaiyeer, Here is one of the grammatically excellent paasurams. First, the paasuram from moonraam thiruvanthaadhi and then how it has the grammatical excellence. peRRam piNai marutham pEi mulai maach chagadam muRRak kaaththoodu pOi uNdu udhaiththu kaRRuk kuNilai viLankanikkuk koNdu eRinthaan veRRip paNilam vaai vaiththu uganthaan paNdu. - paasuram no 64 You have to readjust the words to get the real meaning - like peRRam muRRak kaaththu piNai marutham oodu pOi pEi mulai uNdu maach chagadam udhaiththu balance paasuram to be read as it progresses. To give the meaning of above paasuram- KrishNa as a child did 1. peRRam muRRak kaaththu - grazed the cows and calves in its entirety of the village - peRRam means pasukkaL - cows and calves, muRRa - in its entirety, kaaththu - protected - means took them to forests for grazing, grazed and brought them back home safely from the forests, without these being attacked by wild animals etc. 2. piNai marutham oodu pOi - the two gandharvaas because of their own actions received a curse to stand as marutha trees, stood jointly in the backyard of the house of krishNa for their saapa vimOchanm - release from curse - oodu pOi - krishNa crossed the trees to give the desired release of these two gandharvaas. 3. pEi mulai uNdu - the poothana samhaaram episode - simply put across as - sucked the breasts of the demon poothana who came with the intention of killing child krishNa by giving poisoned breast milk. 4. maach chagadam udhaiththu - kicked the big cart - the sagada asuran episode - who came as the wheel of a big cart with the intention of killing child krishNa, while krishNa was in his cradle. 5. kaRRuk kuNilai viLankanikkuk koNdu eRinthaan - kaRRu - the calf, kuNil - a small staff, - the calf thrown like a small staff to beat a small fruit in the tree - children generally while going to graze cows and calves take two three staffs, similar way krishNa threw the asura like a staff, [who came as calf] to beat another asura who stood in the tree as the fruit, by that one action, both fell dead. 6. veRRip paNilam vaai vaiththu uganthaan paNdu - paNilam means sangu - the conch - paanchajanyam of krishNa - he blew the conch for success of the paaNdavaas at the beginning of war at the kurukshEthra - by that action of blowing of krishNa, it is described in the bagavath geetha, that the hearts of sons of dhritharaashtra were broken. PaNdu means olden days. Now the grammatical specialty- there are four different nouns or actions are in the first line. Their corresponding verbs are found in the second line in the same order. This is the specialty. Generally the subject and predicate [noun and verb] follows each other with the object coming in the queue. Here four subjects or objects first. Then four verbs. This kind of arrangement is called yathaa sankhya alankaaram in sanskrit grammar. The definition of that alankaaram is udhdhishtaanaam padha arthhaanaam poorvam paschaadh yathaa kramam | anudhdhEsO BhavEth athra thath thath athra thath yathaasankhyamishyathE || [re page 547 prathaapa rudhreeyam krishnadhaas varanasi publication] meaning: where you have a particular order of words in the first line, correspondingly if you relate their actions or descriptions in the second line in the same order, then it is called yathaa sankhya alankaaram. You can find this in the paasuram - 4 different actions of krishna in first line- four different verbs describing them in second line in same order. That is the specialty. This I heard in the upanyasam recently of sri TERanganathachar swamy of nanganallur [who was my hindhi teacher also incidentally when both [myself and swamy] were in government service]. Since it was most enjoyable, I wanted to share with the readers. The 614th birthday (tiru-nakshatram) anniversary of Sri kOyil GandhADai vAdhUla-dESika kOyil aNNan varada-nArAyaNa-guru would be observed from September 29 (Monday) onwards, starting with GOshThee recital of periyAzhvAr tirumozhi. The SAttu-muRai on his tiru-nakshatram (kanyA / puraTTASi pooraTTAdi / poorva-prOshThapadA) day (October 8 Wednesday) marks the concluding recital of tiru-vAi-mozhi, irAmAnuSa nooRRantAdi and upadESa-ratnamAlai. Sri aNNan was the eighth generation descendant of Sri mudali ANDAN (dASarathi), the nephew of uDaiyavar. ANDAN had been appointed by uDaiyavar, and had functioned with great distinction, as the sEnApati-dhurandhara (principal administrator) of the Great Temple (periya kOyil) of Lord Sriranga-nAtha in Srirangam. It was ANDAN who accompanied Sri Ramanuja on his exile from Srirangam (occasioned by Saiva persecution), and had neatly carried out the pancha-nArAyaNa-pratishThA (raising of 5 nArAyaNa sannidhi-s) in the kannada region of the hoiSala ruler Bitti-deva alias Vishnu-vardhana. The family name of GandhADai (Gandha, meaning fragrant; ADai, meaning vastram) attached to the son of ANDAN, who as infant exuded the aroma of the cloth on which the Lord's food offering was brought. kOyil aNNan, deriving from such distinguished ancestry, had lived a blessed life of service to the Lord so single-mindedly that he never went out of Srirangam on visits at all. For this reason, he came to be reverenced as 'kAviri kaDavAda GandhADai aNNan' (aNNan who never crossed the river kAviri, which embraces Srirangam on the north and the south). Sri maNavALa-mA-muni appreciated the eminent position of the GandhADai clan in our sampradAyam, and issued a special SlOkam-taniyan in favour of kOyil aNNan who came to be reckoned among the ashTa-dik-gajam (the guardian elephants of the eight directions) of mA-munikaL. As of now, the Great Temple honours for vAdhUla-dESika representing mudali-ANDAN, are rendered by turn to Sri kOyil aNNan svAmi and appan Sri-ranGAcharya svAmi. The other sthala-AchAryas are Sri uttama-nambi, Sriranga-nArAyaNa jeeyar svAmi, and bhaTTar (Sri parASara bhaTTar and Sri vEda-vyAsa bhaTTar, by turn). aDiyEn rAmAnuja-dAsan tirumanjanam sundara rajan, in Srirangam. *************************************** The kOyil aNNan tiru-mALika finds itself short of funds for proper rendering of the daily worship to the presiding deity, azhakiya SinGar. An appeal is accordingly carried in the aNNan tiru-nakshatram programme, for contributions from the disciples, as well as those who rightly revere aNNan as an important personage of the sampradAyam. A deposit of Rs.2000/- will take care of the expenses of a day's tiru-ArAdhanam thro' the interest realised. Inquiries at ~~ Sri K.K.V. That is why AzhwAr clearly states "en nejinAl nOkkik kANEr" thiru voi mozhi 5-5-2. "KInldy see the Lord through my mind" Unless the experience is adapted the emotions cannot be comprehended. It is this emotion which outpoured as the magnum opus -thiru voi mozhi. Dear srEvaishNavites, Sri sadagopan Iyengar from Coimbatore had written an article on how generally people miss the Lord's important appearance, His looks, sAthupadi etc. while visiting him in temples or otherwise. The essence of the article was, we miss the focus of the visit due to lack of total involvement and fail to observe the relevant things. This triggered a train of thought in my mind. This highlighted how AzhwAr s experience with the Lord was a complete contrast ascompared to ourselves. Hence, these series of postings. vanamamalai padmanabhan How to See the Lord 1- AzhwAr 's Observation Please refer to the periya thiruvandhAdhip pAsuram " anREa nam kaN kANum AzhiyAn kAr vuruvam inREA nAm kANAdhiruppadhuvum, enREanum katkaNNAl kANAdha avvuruvai, nenjennum vutkaNNEal kANUm vuNarndhu" periya thiruvandhadhi 28 The Lord cannot be seen by the named organ 'eye'. The eye is only a external sight organ. Unless, our mind experiences and realise the divine Lord we can indeed see Him. The vyAkyAnam is excellent in this regard:" parama bhakthi piRandhu avvasthuvai vozhiya chellAmai yAdhoru pozhudhu piRakkum. appOdhu kANum nam kaN" Thus it is apparent that the inner realisation manifests through the eyes and exhibits the divine sight and not vice-versa.
