Dear sri vaishNava perunthagaiyeer,

In the previous post we saw the two paasuram's words are rearranged to form

following sentences. Now we will take up each sentence for analysis and enjoy

the guna anubhavam of the lord.

1. sOlai soozh kunRu eduththaai - eNNil anRu nee baalan [words of 69th paasuram

].

2. maNNUm malaiyum maRikadalum maaruthamum viNNum nee vizhungiyadhu mei enbar -

eNNil anRu nee baalan.

3. Ezhu ulagu uNdu thanadhu uruvaai aal ilaiyin mEl vaLarntha mei enbar - eNNil

anRu nee baalan.

4. aal anRu vElai neer uLLadhO - sollu

5. seeraazhiyaaikku alagu uNdO sollu - aLavu uNdO? sollu.

6. un vaai aLavu kaNda iv vulagu uNdO sollu

7. un vaai alavu kaNda alagu uNdO sollu

1. sOlai soozh kunRu eduththaai - eNNil anRu nee baalan.

* point: an youngster can not pluck a hill with lot of groves on the hillock -

sOlai soozh kunRu - just like that, and hold it aloft continuously for a long

period, to save the cows and cowherds from torrential rain. That itself proved,

you are not a baalan -but that "leelayaa gOpa vEsha" lord krishNa.

* But, you came, oh lord, in baalan thanadhu uruvaai vaLarntha mei - in the body

of an youngster. That 'maayam' is sathyam - mei enbar. Other aazhvaar - who

enjoyed you as child treating himself as the mother yasOdha - has given 10

beautiful paasurams on this one act of you, oh, krishNa [bhakthaas refer

'attukkuvi' - gOvardhanam ennum koRRak kudaiyE paasurams of periyaazhvaar and

MGV's write up in bhakti list].

1. Now we will see first "Ezhu ulagu uNdu thanadhu uruvaai aal ilaiyin mEl

vaLarntha mei enbar - eNNil anRu nee baalan". [in the next point we will enjoy

"maNNum"]

Point: This word 'thanadhu uruvaai' is very special. He is the supreme lord -

so he can take any roopam

* a visva roopam or viraat roopam,

* a male or female [recall mohini avathaaram in churning the milk ocean episode]

* a boy in vaamanan or an animal roopam in boar- first a small figure - later

very big - grew as thanadhu uruvaai - vaLarntha mei

* or a mixture of man lion - narasimham

* here he has taken the baala roopam - a sisu - a boy under 8 years in age.

* That thanadhu uruvaai vaLarntha mei - it is sathyam - truth.

Another point - is vaLarntha mei - just stopped as baalan - if required could

have grown - further as the word used - vaLarntha mei - the action is not

complete - grammatically if you say, it is iRantha kaala vinai yechcham - vinai

muRRup peRavillai - so vaLantha mei udaiya baalan.

Now see the srimadh bhaagavatham slokam in 12th skandham chapter 9 slokam 20 and

21

sa kadhaachith Bhramamsthasmin pruthivyaa: kakudhi dhvija: |

nyagrODhapOtham dhadhrusE phala phallava sOBhitham || 20

meaning: when he roamed that brahmaNa [meaning maarkaNdEya] saw in a tender leaf

grown in a branch of fig tree which was hanging downwards, a dark shining child.

praaththarasyaam saakhaayaam thasyaapi dhadhrusa sisum |

sayaanam parNaputakE grasantham praBhayaathama: || 21

meaning: In that branch which was in the north direction, the child was sleeping

rolling that leaf as the bed putting the foot in the mouth.

[May be the translation in giving the meaning is poor - pardon me for that]

The point here is that word - sisu - meaning given in Monier williams sanskrit

english dictionary, is "a boy under eight years in age" - baalan in tamil. Is it

perhaps aazhvaar has just used words of bhaagavatham?

1. now the next - maNNUm malaiyum maRikadalum maaruthamum viNNum nee

vizhungiyadhu mei enbar - eNNil anRu nee baalan

As we already saw

maNNum - bhoomi + some thing

malaiyum - hills, mountains + some thing

maRikadalum - oceans which have incessant waves lashing the shores + something

maaruthamum - the wind + some thing

viNNum - the sky + some thing

vizhungiyadhu - swallowed

mei enbar - they said it is truth - sathyam enbar .

It is stated the supreme lord is the source for all 5 basic elements - pancha

bootham -. Here you are able to see four - maN - earth, maRikadal- water,

maarutham - wind, viN- sky or space. The fifthone - fire is missing - that is

mentioned as 'um' with every other four. Since it all sathyam - that it is his

mei - his body - the fifth can not be missed but said indirectly as 'um'. Oh,

what a great paasuram.

2. aal anRu vElai neer uLLadhO? - viN adhO? MaN adhO? sollu. - aal is aala maram

- banyan tree - vata vruksham.

This 'vata' in form of verb in sanskrit also mean 'surrounded, encircled,

spread, covered, etc. vata in noun form means a globule, the banyan or fig tree.

It was a practice in those days to use tamil words for sanskrit meaning and

sanskrit words in tamil meaning etc. that way aal anRi vElai neer uLLadhO - with

out the earth encircling where is the ocean and its waters. Or if you are not

there as the base where is all these oceans, sky, earth etc.- hey krishNa -

please tell me. [vELaa in sanskrit is samudhram- that has become vElai in tamil]

3. seeraazhiyaaikku alagu uNdO sollu - aLavu uNdO? sollu.

Aazhi means a chakram -discus, kadal - ocean, a round plate, sun sooryan.

Considering aazhiyaaykku to mean, the lord who bears a discus - chakradhaari

-which also the meaning considered by UV swamy here - who can measure the discus

for it spits fire - sudharsanar can not be just measured aLavu uNdo sollu - how

to measure sudharsanar using what scale - alagu uNdO sollu.

4. un vaai aLavu kaNda iv vulagu uNdO sollu, un vaai alavu kaNda alagu uNdO

sollu. - who on the earth, can measure the width of the supreme lord's mouth -

then say it is 2+ times the dia of the earth in his viraat swaroopam, or in

baala roopam it was 1.25 inches wide etc. or use what scale? Oh krishNa sollu.

This ulagu here is idavaagu peyar - representing people of this world.

5. two really great paasurams indeed. again and again, read and enjoy these

paasurams. In the next post we will see the bhagavatham slokams as a

continuation.

Dhasan
