ghushyatE yasya nagarE ranga yAtra dinE dinE

tamaham sirasaa vandE rAjAnAm kulasEkharam.

The above is the salutation for srI kulasEkhara AzhvAr. The thaniyan

says

that kulasEkhara AzhvAr started to go to Srirangam every day

(ghushyatE

yasya nagarE) so that he can perform service to Sri Ranganatha.

kulasEkhara AzhvAr was the king of the chEra country (present day

kEraLa). He was born in a place called thiruvanjikkaLam.

His rule is said to be so just that it has been compared to Rama's

rule

over Ayodhya. His tamizh thaniyan says that he is a vEndar

sikhAmaNi.

His devotion towards Lord Rama and his affection/devotion to

SrivaishNavAs

is legendary. His ministers did not always appreciate king

Kulasekhara's

devotion towards SrivaishNavas. They wanted to get rid of all the

Srivaishnavas

that the king had invited to stay in the palace. So, they hid one of

the key

gems that kulasekhara had for his palace deity. When the king did

not find

the gem, the ministers cast aspersions on the Srivaishnavas and

blamed them

for stealing the gem. King Kulasekhara swore by the SrivaishNavas,

and

challenged the ministers to prove their allegation. When the

ministers

kept on insisting that it was the Srivaishnavas who stole the ring,

King

Kulasekhara put his hand into a pot containing a poisonous snake. He

asserted

that if the Srivaishnavas had stolen the gem, then the snake would

bit him,

and if not, the snake won't. The snake did not bit him, and the

ministers

understood their mistake, and confessed and apologized to the King.

It is said that King Kulasekhara started for Srirangam every day.

The ministers

would arrange for some Srivaishnavas to appear before the palace

gate. The

king would then invite them to stay in the palace, and stay back to

serve

them. This happened for years together!

Finally King Kulasekhara left for Srirangam, and performed

tremendous service

there. He was blessed by our Lord, and He gave us a beautiful

prabhandham called

perumAL thirumozhi.

In one of the decades of perumAL thirumozhi, AzhvAr talks about the

nine types
