thiruvaymozhi - a small project

dear bhagavathas,

 

Today being the day in which vEda adhyayanam is normally started for

the year, adiyEn is embarking an a small project. For us, the tamizh

vEdam is in many ways more dear than the samskrit vEdam. In the

tamizh vEdam, thiruvAymozhi occupies a dear portion. There have been

several commentaries on thiruvAymozhi, and several anubhavams by our

AchAryAs on this divine work. Words cannot begin to describe the

greatness, beauty, sweetness and utility of thiruvaaymozhi to us.

 

For people like me, the meanings of thiruvAymozhi are very hard to

understand and requires me to listen the upanyAsam from an AchArya

multiple times. The vyAkhyAnams are hard to read, and are open to

misinterpretation without the help of an AchArya. However, one great

AchArya - perhaps the greatest SriVaishNava AchArya of the 20th

century - srI prativAdi bayankaram aNNangarAchariAr svAmi has done

all of us a great upakAram by writing and publishing a set of

commentaries known as "divyArtha deepikai" on all the naalaayira

divya prabhandham paasurams. This divyaartha deepikai is so sweet &

simple to understand that it brings tears to ones eyes. It is the

most perfect condensation of what all of our AchAryAs have taught

us, and is presented in a simple, easy to understand manner in

simple tamizh.

 

Each paasuram in the naalaayira divya prabhandham is linked to the

previous and next paasurams. So is each set of 10/11 pasurams

(decades). In thiruvaaymozhi, every commentary has what is usually

termed as "pravESa" (introdutory material/preface/entering material)

to each decade. This is a very beautiful section where the

connection between the previous and the current decade is given, and

in most cases a small summary of what is said in the current decade

is provided. By understanding the pravESas to all the decades, one

can get a good idea of what thiruvAymozhi says, and is something

that is enjoyable to do.

 

adiyEn's small project is to translate the simple versions of the

pravESas of all the 100 decads in thriuvAymozhi from the divyaartha

deepikai. adiyEn will attempt to do the translation only for the

very simple version of the divyArtha deepikai. This version is found

in a book titled "aNNa svaamiyin amudha mozhi aayiram", and is the

501st to the 600th amudha mozhi in the book.

 

I request all bhaagavathaas to bear with, point out and correct any

errors, and forgive me for the errors that will come in the

translation. All errors are mine and mine only, and if there is any

good in these postings, all the credit goes to adiyEn's AchArya -

srI thirumalai anandAnpiLLai krishNamAchAriAr svAmi, and other

AchAryAs that adiyEn has had a bhAgyam to learn from/listen to

upanyAsams from in some form or the other, some of whom are -

current day srI rAmAnuja, srI srI srI tridaNdi srIman nArAyaNa

chinna jeeyar svAmi; srI prativaadi bhayankaram aNNangarAchAriAr

svAmi, srI embAr rangAchari svAmi, srI E.S.Bhoovarahaachariaar svAmi

and srI vELukkudi krishNan svAmi.

Yes, the avathArigai is the gem on our asset base. The greatness of our

vyAkyAnAs lie in the avathArikai-s. It brings sharply the meanings of the

'thriu-voi-mozhi' in a nutshell, highlights the subject matter, creates

coherence-bridges between the earlier thiru-voi-mozhi and the present one,

brings forth into our vision AzhwAr's feelings.

 

The avathArikai also in some places presents different interpretations.

 

But what about sriyappadhippadi?
