Every Sri-Vaishnava knows the sanctity and importance of the Sacred Tamil Vedas, also known as the sacred "Dravida Vedam". But few know the actual story behind it's origin. We all know that Parama Purusha Sriman Narayanan, with his Divya Parivaram came down to Earth as 12 Alwars and composed the sacred 4000 verses in Tamil (Naalaayira Divya Prabandham). But the reason behind this was not known to many . This is the intention behind the posting of these mails . This is given in the Varaaha Puranam (Utthara Khandam-Dakshina Sheshadri Mahaathmyam). It was actually a promise given by Sri Srinivasa Perumal to Agasthyar. First of all, I will tell you how Sriman Narayanan came to a place called as Dakshina Sheshadri. Long ago, there was a big fight between Vaayu and Adishesha. The fight was about who was physically superior among the two. So, they decided to take on each other in a contest. Adishesha wound himself tightly around the "Meru Parvatham" and challenged vaayu to try and release the mountain from his grip. Vaayu proceeded to give adishesha a spectacular display of his physical prowess. He hurled himself with great force on the mountain, but even that did not serve so much as to cause even a small discomfort to the mighty Adishesha. Vaayu tried various other strategies, but Adishesha took him on with a smug countenance. Finally, the enraged Vaayu lifted Meru high into the sky and hurled it down to earth with all his might. The impact saw Meru broken into two parts-the bigger part being called "Sheshadri", which is the famous "Tirumala" hills, and the smaller part came to rest in the south. Hence it is called as "Dakshina Sheshadri". Adishesha was frustrated by his defeat. So, he took up a severe penance in the Dakshina Sheshadri. Pleased with his devotion, Sriman Narayanan appeared before him in the form of "Sri-Bhu-Nila sametha Sri Srinivasa Perumal". He then granted him a boon saying that He would reside on that hillock with His Divya Parivaram in a Vimanam called the "Punya Vardhana Vimanam". Thus, He came to be worshipped in the divine form of Sri Srinivasa Perumal. This hillock is situated in a picturesque village known as Terakanambi, bordering the three states of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Now that we have seen how Perumal came to Dakshina Sheshadri, in the forthcoming postings, let us see many stories which sing the glory of His divine and eternal stay at Dakshina Sheshadri. Hope these postings interest the great Bhagavathas in this group. (to be continued.....) Ramanuja Dasan, Srinivasa Rajan.
