Srimathe Ramanujaya Namah

There were a few typos in the previous note, hence sending

this corrected version,

Please note that the points covered here are far from exhaustive and

really

do not do any justice to the excellent upanyasams that are being

delivered by

Sri Srinidhi Swamin.

In spite of using more than one person's real-time notes, we can not help

leaving out

many important points. This is just a glimpse of the upanyasams.

We therefore humbly request you all to dial-in and listen to the

upanyasams.

11/20/04: Uttara Poorva Dinacharya

by Sri T.A. Srinidhi Swamin- Kanchipuram - Upanyasam # 6

Among the acharyas all kripa maatra prasannacharyas are great. Udaiyavar

is the ratnam.

But MM (Mamunigal) stands out. This does not mean we are putting down the

others.

MM’s gunas are special for example, he would never get angry.

(In Srimad Ramayanam, Perumal sent Hanuman (tiruvadi) to search for

Piratti (Sita).

When Hanuman saw Mandodari, although she was very beautiful, he

realized she

could not be Sita. Then he got caught by the rakshasas. They lit

his tail and he burnt Lanka down.

Later he sees the fire and feels sad about what he did. He

realizes that his anger drove him to do this.

“What would have happened to Sita piratti in this fire?” he thinks to

himself. )

Once when MM was in his matam some people lit fire to the matam.

MM sat inside as he did not want to put any effort to save himself.

Emberuman must save us. (Ex: Draupadi episode. Until she gave

up and

stopped trying to save herself, Emberuman did not come to her.

Once she lifted both her hands, his nAma saved her.)

(Similary, Sita Piratti suffered in Lanka. She realized that she

did paapam

too and that’s the reason for her suffering. She contemplates “ When

leaving

Ayodhya Rama told me that it would be difficult in the forest.

But I did great apacharam saying that my father Janaka got me married to

a woman in man’s form! This was bhagawad apacharam.

Then when Rama went chasing maricha and she heard the scream,

I did apacharam by saying that Lakshmana had other motives. This

hurt Lakshaman very much.

This was bhAgawata apacharam, and hence I am suffering”.

Hanuman

saw her suffering and asked her for permission to squash all the

rakshasis.

Piratti said they were just following their duty given to them by their

king just

like Hanuman himself was following Rama’s orders. Bhattar in Sri

Guna Ratna Kosham says “Maatar maithili - - - “. She thought ”Since I am

His property I should just not be the one to take action. It is His

responsibility

to save me.” It was easy for Her to leave Lanka and could burn

Ravana

to ashes with Her pati vrata dharma shakti.

But she chose not to do so)

People who are blind, mute and of neuter gender are specially liked by

Emberuman.

Here the adjectives mean the following:

Blind---should be blind to others’ faults

Mute----should be unable to discuss others’ faults

Neuter -----should NOT be interested in another man’s wife

Such qualities are possible only by a sadAchArya anugraha.

MM’s shishyas possessed these qualities.

Sloka 24:

=======

MM used to start worshipping Andal first. Note: The pashuram in

Ramanuja NTD

which talks about Andal “taalonrilla - - -- -“ ends with

“maamuniyee”!

Almost indicates that Udaiyavar knew he would come back as MM.

(MM went to Srirangam like a girl leaving her mother’s home (alwar

tirunagari)

to her husband’s (Periya Perumal) house.

The 24th slokam talked about his mangalashansams to Sri

Rangarajan)

Sloka 25

=======

In so many DD’s there are no Bhaktas to have anubhavam.

In Tirumalai we stand right there having the anubhavam of Emberuman

because we value that more due to the presence of several other Bhaktas

waitng to get a glimse of Him … Similary MM used to just stand in front

of

sannidhis in Srirangam. They say that we need to rest against the pillars

to

prevent ourselves from swooning and falling down after enjoying

Rangarajan.

Sloka 26

=======

In MM’s sannidhi in Srirangam, his small archa tirumeni was made

with his

chombu(pot) paatram. Two tirumenis were made, one in Alwar

Tirunagari,

one in Srirangam MM matam. Swamy Nammalwar’s upadesha mudra,

conveys that for people bitten by the snake samsara, the mantravaadi

mudra

will remove the poison from the samsara).

(Maruti siri aanadan was the name given to the sisya who conveyed the

message to Udaiyavar in Tirunarayanapuram that krimi kanta chola was no

more.

Just like Maruti gave the message of Ravana’s death to Piratti from

Emberuman).

The Tirumeni in Tirunarayanapuram has his strength.

He wears a vakula maalai (like Swamy Nammalawar. He also wears 2

pavitrams.

The sishyas ask if they could have anubhavam with the tirumeni.

The tirumeni spoke and that’s why he is called Peshum Yatirajar in

Tirunarayanapuram.

MM brought some tiru-man (sand) from Lokachariar sannidhi and kept it in

the back

of his matam to do kalakshepam - Tirumalai alwar chitram. Even today

special goshti

occurs for MM tirunakshatram and Tiruadhyayanam days here. Just

like Embar was

a shadow for Emberumanar, MM was a shadow to Tirumalai alwar

(SriSaileshar).

Just as Nambillai days, the crowd for his kalakshepam was more than

Nammperumal goshti.

One day Emberuman got up and began to peep to see Nambillai’s goshti.

(In emberumanr days there were 4 people for tiruvilukku kainkaryam

itself.

One used to bring it, one to put the tiri, one to put the oil and light

it and check on it).

When Emberuman peeped from behind the tiru vilakku picchan he was told to

get right back into the sannidhi. Emberuman wanted to enjoy

Tirvaimozhi.

(Ariyar episode about saligram perumal preferring to be in the mouth of

those

who recite tiruvoimozhi rathen than in the paak box can be recalled here

that speaks of the greatness of Tiruvaimozhi).

Once when Udaiyavar was heading towards Tirumalai, a cow boy told him

the direction. Swamy fell flat and prostrated to him thinking him

as an

acharya as he showed him the direction to Tirumalai.

Sloka 27

=======

MM would pour the meanings of Divya Prabandam.

DP clears the doubts in the Vedas. Bhattar used to give more importance

to the DP vidwan than the Veda vidwan during His kalakshepam.

Swamy Vedantachariar says that the alwar’s arulicheyyals clear up all the

doubts in Vedas. The DP is like a vyaakyaanam for the Vedas.

That is the reason DP leads the porappadu and Vedas follow looking for

Him!

Swamy Emberumanar used DP as the basis for all His great Sanskrit

works.

Nanjeeyar would never start his kalakshEpam unless a divya prabhandha

adhikari was present.

When once a veda vidwan asked him the reason for this partiality.

He asked them a question “ Who is the real paratatwa?”.

The vEda vidwan said it is rather confusing and is hard to determine.

Whereas the D.P adhikAri quickly showed EmberumAn is the real paratatva.

D.P clearly shows that samsAram is a “vairi” and that nitya kainkaryam

is the ultimate goal. D.P is a mixture of rasAnubhavam as

well as rahasyArtham.

It is like both medicine and dessert. MM would always serve this mixture.

Bhashyakarar has written his great works always keeping in mind the

rahasyArtham from D.P. For example in his work on Bhagavad Geeta

while explaining “sambhavAmi yugE yugE”, he says among the

three reasons for this the foremost is for parithrAnAya sadhUnAm

and the other two namely “vinAshAya cha dushkrutAm” and

“dharma samsthApartham” are secondary. Although Hiranya

did bhagavad apachAra for a long time He did not come down.

But appeared only when he started bhAgavatha apachAra by torturing

PrahlAda.

Gajendralwan episode is remembered here.

Why did Emberuman have to come physically? He could have saved Gajendran

by His sankalpam right from Sri Vaikunta or He could have sent chakrat

alwar.

But He came Himself on Garudalwan who represents Vedas.

He came without getting vishvaksena or Piratti’s permission.

Why did he come all the way? Because Gajendra did not call him

fearing the loss of his life, he wanted to offer the lotus he had to

His tiruvadi before it withered away. Emberuman came personally

to accept this kainkaryam from His bhakta. Bhattar says namaskAram

to the speed with which He came! EmberumAnAr used to recite

alwar’s srisookthi “Unn shudar chOdi mareyAdE…” and reflects

it in ShriBhashya also. By contemplating on the meaning of the

Divya Prabhandha one gets the desire to perform kainkaryam for

EmberumAn. MM’s upanyAsam used to do such an upanyAsam.

To be continued

We humbly request you all to dial-in and listen to this upanyasam

series
