Guest guest
Srimathe Ramanujaya Namaha: Dear Vaishnavas, Adiyen hereby trying to write few lines about ATIAHARA, one of the six faults that destroy bhakthi, which is for the benefit of those who have a strong desire to attain pure devotional service. Many people may think that the word ATIAHARA refers only to overeating, but this is n ot so.IT is said " A sober person who can tolerate the urge to speak, the minds demands, the actions of anger, and the urges of the tongue, belly and genitals is qualified to make disciples all over the world." Bhojana also means to enjoy the objects of the five senses.Form by the eyes, sound by the ears, smell by the nose, taste by the tongue, feeling of heat and cold, soft and hard by the touch, the five senses enjoy.Krishna says in Gita 3.5-6 "Everyone is forced to act helplessly according to the qualities he has acquired from the modes of nature. Therefore no one can refrain from doing something, not even a moment. One who restrains the senses of action but whose mind dwells on sense objects certainly deludes himself and is called a pretender." HE also says in Gita 6.16-17 "There is no possibilty of one's becoming a yogi, O Arjuna,if one eats too much,or eats too little, sleeps too much , or does not sleep enough. He who is temperate in his habits of eating sleeping , working, and recreation can mitigate all material pains by practicing bhakthi yoga." One should not endeavour for palatable foodstuffs and fine clothes.Accept the sanctified bhagwath prasadam that is easily obtainable. This is devottees life style.Whatever is required take only that.Taking more or less will not yield auspicious results. If the practitioner takes or accumulated more than necessary, his spiritual life will be lost due to his being controlled by material mellows. If he does not properly accumulate , then the body, which is his means of worship, will not be protected. House holders can collect in order to mantain family members. They should earn their livelihood and save according to religious principles. With this savings they should serve the Lord, the devottees, guests, family members and themselves. If a house holder collects more than enough then this is an impediment in his devotional servic and in his acheiving Lord's mercy. Guest guest
Dear Smt Vedavalli, What I was saying is, the sukrtam of generating Bhakti in us is done by the Lord Himself, according to Bhattar, whether in this life or previous. Bhattar expresses similar view in SrI guNa ratna kOSam also, where he says, disrepcting vEdas, considering someone else to be the Lord, or saying there is no God, all those things are due to lack of thAyAr's (His krpA) glances on the people at least even for a second (ref. Ahu: vEdAn amAnam... verse). Then why you, Ms Nappinnai and myself are seemingly talking against vEdas? One may get a doubt. In comparison with thamizh vEdam, even those vEdas are like "dhivitti" before Sun. vEdaiScha sarvai: aham Eva vEdya: nAham vEdai: na tapasA.. Both are said by the Lord Himself! Bhattar had given a very simple defintion for Bhakti before he took up the discussion on Bhakti, which I posted. I will post that in next postings. According to Bhattar, the so-called dhyAnam or meditation is nothing but thinking of His kalyANa guNas.
