Guest guest
Respected Bhakthas, I had a few questions about the rituals of jathakarma and namakarana performed for new born babies. Please forgive me if these questions are irrelevant. I would like to clear my ignorance. 1. Are rituals like jathakarma and namakarana relevant for Srivaishnavas? 2. If so, when should they be performed? I have heard that it should be performed on the 11th day after the birth of the baby. Is that true? If any of you could also enlighten me about the importance of these rituals, I would be very happy. -- Adiyen Nagaraja Ramanuja Dasan
Guest guest
Dear Sri Nagaraja, The rituals like jatakarma, namakarana etc.. are one of Shodasha(16) samskaras prescribed for all hindus. Srivaishnava is one of the sect in hindu and hence these samskaras are very much relevant. Some of the samskaras and the time when done as I remember is listed down: 1. Jatakarma - At birth(11th day) 2. Namakarana - At birth(11th day) or after one year 2. Nishkramana - After about 4 months (Taking baby outside the house) 3. Annaprasana - At about 5-6 months (giving baby soft rice/dhal etc..) 4. Vidhyarambha - After 3-4 years 5. Upanayana - At 7-8 years 6. Vivaha - After 20 years 7. Garbhadana - After vivaha 8. Pumsavana - After garbhadana and so on.......... Please note that though we are Srivaishnavas, we're hindus. So whatever prescribed by Shruti(Veda) is very much relevant to us.
