Guest guest
Srimathe Ramanujaya Namaha Athimanushasthavam-36, 37, 38 Adiyen's translation of Sri EVBV Swami's Upanyasam is a very pale imitation compared to the original lecture, it is like holding a candle during bright sun. One has to listen to Him, and they are transported to Thiruayarpadi, Ayodhya, SriRangam while the speaker paints such a beautiful picture. One can actually feel, see and hear the activities of Kannan running around, stealing butter, getting caught and crying. Without further adieu let me attempt to write a synopsis of yesterday's Upanyasam. In Sloka 36 Kurathazhvan asks Krishna "You who is supposed to be pure, one who cannot be comprehended even by yogis, who is capable of releasing samsaris from their karma bandas, moreover one who is Parameshvara" and this is how You are glorified by one and all, how were You bound by Yasoda's rope and couldn't get out of the ties? I am surprised! Now Sri ESBV Swami goes on to give details of how our Purvacharyas reveal the secrets of Krishna's Leelas. Comparing samsara bandhas, Sri Pillai Thirunaraiyur Arayar says it is like trying to undo a bird's nest, which is built with so many materials that nobody can unravel it. By ourselves we cannot come out of the bondage of samsara. He is Sarvajnan, and He knows it all, but He was behaving with ignorance and got caught by Yasoda. He is Eswaran for all, and is called Parameshwaran. You who is birth less, but You are born of Your own will to Yasoda. The Vedas worship You, and You are above all, but You were tied by Your mother, and an Azhvars' enjoy this by way of singing, "kattunnappanniya Parumayan". In Vishnu Puranam it is said that, when after He got tied He just stood there and cried and cried, unable to untie Himself. In another Pasuram of Divya Prabhandam it is sung "Udara bandam", i.e. he was tied to a mortar around His chest, for the reason that Sri.MahaLakshmi lives there, "Alarmel mangai urai marbha". Here the Upanyasakar ties another episode similar to this one from Ramayanam, which was shown only to Periazhvar, and this was told to Sita as an event from Her past by Hanuman. Even Lakshmana doesn't know this. One day Rama wanted to tease Sita, and whilst She was wearing Thilakam, He shook Her hand made a mess. Site feigned to be angry with Rama and She wanted to punish Him. To make Piratti happy Rama agreed for any kind of punishment, and Sita tied His hands with jasmine garland and told Him "if You love me, You will stay tied for the whole night like this." And He did… Paramathma, Jagadrashakan and He was bound by a jeevathmas' love, He could have freed Himself very easily, He who was able to eliminate Kara, Dhushana and all their army of 16000 single handedly, could have gotten out. But Her words, and Love made Him stay bound. He is the purest of all, full of Shama, and He was bound by words. Actually our Purvacharyas say that Bharatha is the soul for Rama, and Rama didn't listen to Him, (an athma is supposed to listen to its soul) but Rama who is all pervading, listens to words and love (asritha parathantriam). Kanna considers Rishis as His soul and He is also showing Himself as an asritha parathanthrian. Our Purvacharyars say that if we understand that He was bound, then we will never be bound by samsara sagara. If we recognize that He was born we will never be reborn. It is only through Him that we can cross the ocean of samsara and reach the shores of His Thiruvadi. In one of His compositions Sri Parasara Bhattar of SriRangam makes a claim that Lord is reclining in the banks of Kaveri just for His sake, how and why is it? When Gajendra was caught by the jaws of the crocodile and cried out for many years, calling out "Narayanavo.. Manivanna" Perumal felt that He didn't come fast enough to save the elephant. Compared to Gajendra I have been caught in eternal time, with 10 indrias, and a huge ocean of samsara, where as Gajendra was in a small pond. I need more help and that's why He has come closer to me. How much our ancestors had bhavam and faith in Perumal!!!!!!!!!!! Just like Krishna was bound by His mother, and Sita Piratti went to jail (in the forest of Ravana) for 10 months, why? She wanted all the women who had been kept captive for so many years to be released, and a 10 month period is, She tried to preach to each head of Ravana (Dasamuka) for one month. There Piratti did Purushakaram for those jeevathmas. But what bound Rama and Krishna was bondage of love! Sloka 37 In this Sloka Kurathazhvan recaps the previous Sloka 34 where infant Kanna terminated 4 demons, effortlessly 1) by sucking Puthana's life out when she came with poisoned milk, 2) by overturning the cart which was possessed by Sakatasuran, in a fit of crying and kicking and 3) by pulling the mortar and going in between the two trees and killing the 2 demons in the form of trees. As an infant when You were in Ayarpadi they were drawn to You like "fire flies" and got burnt. None of Your actions can be considered as extra ordinary, they were befitting a baby only. Sloka 38 NandaGopa and Yasoda had so much butter, milk and Yogurt, the size of huge mountains, and they were praying for a baby. You were born in their house, yet You ran around to other's houses, stole butter, and when the pots were empty You broke them, got caught, and got tied by Your mother and all the Gopis made fun of You and laughed at You, why did You steal from Your neighbors? He did all this to show His Parathvam and Sowlabyam. Also the reason He made the noise by breaking the pots was, three fold.. Kanna hated buttermilk. In Siria Thirumadal "morar kudam urutti", just like He kicked the wealth of brahmanas, which is Vedas. If three Vedas are put in a pot and after they are churned and the cream removed which are "A, U, Ma", there is nothing left in Vedas. Another explanation is that He was practicing killing of Chanura and Mustika. He used to enjoy the sound of breaking pots, but the reason He broke them was that after He finished stealing all the butter, and licked it clean, He was mad that the pot wasn't made of butter so that He could have more. He did make a sound on purpose, because He wanted to be caught by the women, brought to Yasoda, He wanted to be laughed at by Ayarpadi women and complained, so that Yasoda can tie Him. If He didn't want to, can anybody catch Him? Isn't He the "Perumayan?" DON"T MISS NEXT WEEKS' UPANYASAM. Next week's Sloka Swami Kurathazvan is still enjoying Krishna leela. In Sloka 39 He is asking Kanna, You were going to be caught, because the butter pot was empty, but Your hands and mouth were full of butter. So what did You think ? If I have butter in my hands they will know that I stole it, but if I wipe the remaining butter all over my body they cann't say that I ate it. He who knows all wipes the white butter all over His dark Thirumeni which was quite a contrast, and He was more visible than ever. He who knows it all, wouldn't He know that act wasn't going to save Him. Let us hear how our Purvacharyas explain this.
