BENEDICTIONS TO THE WORKS OF AZHVARS AND ACHARYAS. =========================================================== Azhvargal vazhi long live the Azhvars Arulicheyal vazhi Long live the works of Azhvars, known as Dhivya Prabandangal Thazvu adum ill kuravartham vazi long live all illustrious Acharyas like Nathamunigal, Alavandar, Swami Emperumanar, Bhattar, Nanjeeyar, Nampillai etc., Eaz parum uyya In order to emancipate all the seven lokas, the works of Acharyas are extremely useful to all. Avargal All acharyas commencing from Nathamunigal and host of others. Uraithavaigal tham the various commentaries and other original works of rahasya literature. Vazhi Long live Saiyya marai thannudanay sarnthu all are wished to live long together with the spectacularly placed vedas. In the earlier stanza it has been taken that the criticism of jealous people is as good as praise. This stanza is praying for benedictions to the (1) authors of Dhivya Prabandas, (2) the Dhivya Prabandangal, (3) Acharyas (4) the various interpretations given by all the Acharyas. This is necessary from a person who is a true well wisher. The wishing of eternity is for the Vedas as well. It is an acknowledged fact that the source of knowledge contained in Azhvar's Dhivya Prabandams is from the Samskritha Vedas. It is also established that all the commentaries and explanations of Dhivya Prabandam are in accordance with the truths contained in the Vedas. Devotees may recall the time when the Dhivya Prabandams had ceased to be in vogue during the days of Sriman Nathamunigal, and to day we see the existence of these prabandams even after more than one thousand years and is regularly chanted in the temples and in all households and explained in detail in the discourses. This is chiefly because of the ‘vazthu’ (wishing long life) by Swami MM and our daily prayer, ‘Satakopan senthamizh nool vazha’. This stanza suggests to us as that in this work URM, the glory of Azhvars, their works of Dhivya Prabandangal, (arulicheyal) and the various commentaries thereon by various Acharyas are elaborated. Azhvargal vazi: Parankusa (Sri Nammalwar) Parakala (Thirumangai Alwar) etc., are meant. They indulged in wishing Lord long life. Here, Swami MM is wishing long life for Azhvars. Note. ‘vazi satakopan’ and ‘vazi parakalan’ Arulicheyal vazi: The outpourings of Azhvars, i.e. Dhivya Prabandangal is the result of knowledge very kindly granted to them by the Lord. They are Veda Chathushtayam. Thiruvirutham, Thiru Asirium, Peria Thiruvandathi and Thiruvoimozi of Swami Nammalwar. and Angopangangal : all other twenty prabandams of other Azhvars. It is wished to survive and live long life against the normal impediments due to place, time and person. (Desa, Kala, Adhikari) The usages ‘vazi Satakopan Itta Thamizpa Isai’ and ‘vazi Parakalan Ennil Thamizpa Isai’ are to be remembered in this context. Kuravar tham vazi: The works of Alwars are useful to us due to the commentaries of Acharyas. But for their illustrious interpretations no one can comprehend the inner meanings. Therefore, their long life is also prayed for in this stanza. Thazvadumil kuravar: Thazvadu means degradation. Here it refers to indulgences in the various standard literary works bereft of mention of Lord and his attributes and actions. One cannot find such degradation with our Acharya's works. They always indulge in reciting the Arulicheyal and discussing the finer interpretations given in the commentaries. Such people are few and rare. The benedictions are for them. (podu-pokkum arulicheyalilay aiththu.) Eaz parum uyya avargal uraiththavaigal: The commentaries are the life works of Acharyas. It is for the benefit of all in this world. They looked after the interest of all of us. Saiya marai thannudaney sernthu: The knowledge of Acharyas about Vedas and Arulicheyal enabled them to establish that the Vedas follow the intentions and utterances of Azhvars. Whenever devotees decide to fix any correct or proper meaning for any portion of Vedas, the parallel portion of the prabhandams of Azhvars is the guiding light and is always helpful. Without the Dhivya Prabandams the meanings of Vedas are not intelligible and may be misleading. Here the nature of Vedas to hide its meanings to undeserving people, this is to be noted and Vedas revealed its true nature to Azhvars who are the recipient of the grace of the Lord. So the benedictory is prayed for Vedas as well. =============================================== Next post: 4th pasuram =============================================== Azhvar Emberumanar Jeeyar Thiruvadigale Saranam Ramanuja Dasan, VP Srinivasa Varadan
Guest guest
Sri: Srimathe Ramanujaya Nama: adiyEn had heard of one other interpretation as well on the line "seyy maRai thannudanE sErndhu". One way to see it, is to say "uraiththavaigaL thAm vAzhi" and "seyya maRai vAzhi". That is, the benediction is to Acharyas works as well as to the Vedas. The other way I had heard was to look at the line as "seyya maRai thannudanE sErndhu uraiththavaigaL thAm vAzhi". That is, all the acharyas vyakhyanams include the Vedas at all the times. They do not interpret Azhvars verses independently - instead, for every explanation they give, they touch on the Vedas. Hence, the benediction is to those vyakhyanams that are based on the Vedas - "seyya maRai thannudanE sErndhu uraiththa vyAkhyAnangaL vAzhi". adiyEn madhurakavi dAsan --- VP Srinivasa Varadan <vpsvaradan wrote: > * AzhvArkaL vAzhi * aruLich seyal vAzhi * > thAzhvAthumil kuravar thAm vAzhi ** - Ezh pArum > uyya * avarkaL uraiththavaikaL thAm vAzhi * > seyya maRai thannudanE sErnthu (3) > > Saiyya marai thannudanay sarnthu all are wished to > live long together with the spectacularly placed vedas. > > So the benedictory is prayed for Vedas as well. >
