Haridwar is at the base of the Shivalik hills, where the Ganga comes down from the Himalayas. Haridwar means 'Gateway to the abode of the Gods'. Best season to visit is May to November. Apparently there are UPSTDC tourist bungalows available, though we stayed at an ashram near to Sri Swamiji's ashram in Haridwar, which is perched directly on the shores of mother Ganga. Rishikesh is not far away, and Sri Swamiji has another charming ahsram with a small temple there too. Swamiji's ashrams in Haridwar and Rishikesh are enormous in holy presence, yet cozy in physical size. So they are not able to accomodate devotees like in the Mysore ashrama. Though I have to say that the priests and the ashrams in Haridwar and Rishikesh rank high in my list of favorite Datta ashrams throughout the world. The Ganges river flows crystal clear and refreshingly cool and it was brilliant to be able to step out of Swamiji's loving darshan and into the embrace of Mata Ganga and then be blessed again by out Gurudev. (A definate a high-light of this and many incarnations.) The Ganges water is so pristine that you can clearly see the fish swimming far below a high altitude foot bridge in Rishikesh. A spiritually fabulous, awesome, retreat. We got there by flying firt to New Delhi and then went by fast train to Haridwar (199 km). The train was quite comfortable and the atmosphere jubilant. Going back to Delhi I travelled overnight on a sleeper train. This part was wonderful in a most memorable journey. According to the Indian tourist pamphlet, you can also fly from Delhi to Jolly Grant Airport which is about 18 km from Rishikesh. You could hire a taxi, though I personally don't know anything about that. I did not come away enlightened, but I did come away light. I was thrilled by the spirituality and Divinity that permeated the whole atmosphere. A soul stirring journey, to say the least. I will be delighted to answer any further questions.
