- The Power of Charanagathi

Welcome Anu. Jaya Guru Datta. You have prompted me to write again

about the earliest of my many experiences with Sri Swamiji.

(this has already appeared in the Tamil Edition of the Bhakthi Mala

magazine which comes from our Chennai Ashrama ).

 

I had just joined M/s Eureka Forbes Ltd in Chennai then. This was an

Electrolux Company selling Vacuum Cleaners. It was the 25th of August 1983.

This was my first Month at this Company.. and my sales target was to sell 8

Vacuum Cleaners before 26th August. As luck cud have it, I had completed 7

sales as of the 20th itself, but the 8th sale was elusive.

 

On the 25th night, I cud not bring myself to sleep.. it was very

dissappointing that I was falling short of target in the very first month

of my career. I was in my mind, talking to His Holiness.. I was telling

Him - "You have always taught me that I should do my duty to the best of

my ability, and thereafter, anything that happens to me or anything I do

or achieve , is always Your Sankalpa ( Will ) only. I am only an

instrument in Your Hands.. so if this is the way You Will that my career

should start, so be it.. even this is Your Blessing". Having poured my

heart out, in a spirit of surrender at my Sadguru's feet, I slowly drifted

to sleep.

 

The next morning , I was called by my boss.. he wanted to know why I

hadnot done my target. I just said " I have done my best.. Only God knows

why I am short of target" He was smiling at me.. " You are IN SALES.. AND

YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT GOD !! how can you tell me that ?? is He going to

come and sell for you ?? Are you right in saying so ??.. well, I also

understand that you have given it your best effort.. so I think I will

ensure you do your target NOW. Just go to the Accountant and ask her to

give you the credit for a sale done by one of your colleagues.. that will

take you to 8 sales this Month.. Happy ??"

 

I was more than happy. In my mind I was thanking my Sadguru for His Grace..

this was an overnight response !!. The Accountant said - " You are a

lucky guy . See we had someone who worked for us just for a week.. and then

he resigned. In that one week, he sold just one vacuum cleaner. It is that

sale that we will transfer to your credit.. so, open your order book and

write down the details of the Customer who bought that machine." I was just

too delighted. My Sadguru had heard my appeal of last night.. and within 10

Hours, HE had also arranged the response !! This was "magic" I thought..

without realising that there was more to come. I pulled out my Order book,

and got ready to write.

 

The Accountant started reading.. and as I heard what she read, I was spell

bound.. shocked.. at a loss for words to describe that feeling. This is

what she read - " The Customer Name is Sri Ganapathi Sachidananda Swamiji,

The address is Sri Ganapathi Sachidananda Ashrama, Ooty Road, Mysore...

have you written that down correctly ??"

 

Can you understand my feeling ?? I cannot describe them in words. My

Sadguru had Himself purchased a Vacuum Cleaner, and also ensured that my

Boss gave me the credit for that sale !! This was beyond magic.. this was

divine Grace. This was Guru Kadaaksha.. His Blessing.

 

I was in tears.. and I just ran into my Boss's room to explain what

happenned. For the next 15 minutes, my Boss found the time to discuss Guru

Tatva, Bhagavat Gita.. et all.. and it was Sales Closing Day!!.

 

I was in Mysore in September, alongwith my Father. Sri Swamiji was seated

in the interview room facing the Datta Sannadhi. I just prostrated in front

of Sri Swamiji.. I wanted to say it all.. but I was searching for words..

His Holiness smiled at me in all His Divinity.."What happenned ?" He asked.

The words came from nowhere. I narrated the whole story.. I was almost in

tears as I spoke.

 

"It is all Datta's Grace..Tell Datta.." This is all that He said. I was

amazed.

 

How did His Hoilness get to that Vacuum Cleaner ?? My Office records

revealed that it was delivered to Mr H Y Krishnaswami of Chennai. When I

met him, Mr. Krishnaswami explained that he had purchased it to help clean

the carpets in the newly constructed, Kriya Yoga Hall.

 

Charanagathi.. or surrender to the Sadguru - is a tough lesson to learn..

because we always like to believe that WE in our intelligence do all the

planning and execution to detail.. which can lead us to success in our

lives !! Well, I have learnt to feel it differently.. when we surrender to

that Supreme Sadguru, we only act as His Instruments.. thereafter, success

or failure donot make a difference.. only Karma or Duty remains to be done.

Once we learn to let go of ourselves in a spirit of Charanagathi

( surrender ) at His feet.. He immediately picks us up, in all His Loving

and Divine Grace !!. Jaya Guru Datta.
