Here is today's saying:

 

“Upavasa does not mean merely fasting. In fact, literally, it means staying

near. Near whom? Near God. It means to feel the presence of God, not

merely sitting near the idol of God. Fasting is complimentary to keeping

awake. Keeping awake provides you with an opportunity to consciously think

of God. These also have purifying properties. We all know the benfits of

fasting. It is essential physically, because it purifies the system and

enhances gastric fire. It is a good mental exercise as well, by practicing,

one can slowly get rid of the grip of the sense organs."
