Jaya Guru Datta,

Here is today's saying:

“In a small town there was a Sadhu who was an ardent devotee of Lord Shiva.

Everyday he walked through the streets chanting 'Om Namah Shivaya! Om Namah

Shivaya!' The children in the town considered him mad. They taunted and

teased him, and even threw rocks at him. But his strong devotion in Shiva

protected him from these miseries. Before the stones hit the renunciant,

they turned into flowers.

However, one day, the Sadhu became angry when the children began to throw

rocks at him. 'I have had enough of these insults,' he thought. 'I'll

teach them a lesson.' So saying, he picked up a stone and threw it at the

children. As he did so he forgot to chant the Lord's name. Lord Shiva was

observing all this from above and thought to himself:

"If this devotee is going to try and take care of himself and not rely on

me, then I will leave him to his own ways. If he doesn't need me and

thinks that he must take events into his own hands, then let it be so.'

With that, Shiva didn't go to his aid. So all the stones that the children

threw did not turn into flowers. Instead, they bruised the renunciant all

over his body."
